"I Wish I'd Let Myself Be Happy"

I've read more books and articles I can count about how the brain functions, how negative thinking becomes a very real rut, how worrying doesn't do anything but give you serious health problems. I became convinced that my stress reactions were more harmful to my health than French fries and adjusted accordingly. I'm very interested in being a happy person. It's a personal goal. I'm very goal-oriented, just work with me here....more

I Will Not be the Mother of a Mean Girl

Her plate sits before her and she worries over her dinner roll, tiny pieces dropping onto the table top. My own dinner has gone tasteless and I'm begging her to be honest because the words Liam drops among us can't possibly be true. These guilt crumbs gathering up and her picking picking picking but never speaking speaking speaking. I'm fighting for clarity over the situation because I am not the mother of a bully... could I be so naive?...more

Tips on Achieving Family Balance from an Older Generation

Do you regularly ask your parents, grandparents or older-generation people in your life questions about life, marriage, and parenting? If not, you're missing out on the knowledge they have to pass down. While things may have been different in their day -- like, omg, no need for letters to moms on iPhones back then -- they have a wealth of experience that can help us make sense of life in our times. Rebekah at Potholes and Pantyhose shared some things she learned by watching her parents -- who recently celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary. ...more

Thinking of Ireland

Saint Paddy's Day had me thinking of that green nation floating in the Atlantic, a place for which I've real affection. I had the good fortune to be sent there for work one summer. I lived in a furnished apartment a few miles from my work, a short train ride into central Dublin. I rented a bicycle -- it seemed the right thing to do, drank whiskey and Guinness, and swooned whenever the guys in the office said, well, anything in their charming accents. "So you'll have that ready for Monday's review then, will you?" Um, what were we talking about? That's right, Ireland. ...more

Recipe Scrapbook: Sifting Through Memories Past and Present

So it’s done. I have gathered all of my recipes into one binder. It’s a whole different system now. I used to tear what looked good out of magazines and pile pages on top of the binder. Now they are tucked neatly inside clear plastic dividers, along with index cards from my mom’s old recipe box and various scraps and printouts of my own. I knew it was going to be a project, but I didn’t anticipate the time-travel component. I didn’t expect such a solitary undertaking to feel so cozily crowded with friends and family. ...more

The Time I Unintentionally Taught My Kids About Shoplifting

So I took my kids shoplifting this weekend -- at least that’s what two conscientious Target employees would have had you believe. But I can explain. We needed to accomplish two main things in a short amount of time: buy party favors for Caroline’s upcoming Sound of Music birthday party and find pants that fit Caroline. Though it is approaching shorts season, we could hold out no longer since even Caroline’s winter boots have not been able to hide the fact that she’s been sporting that Revenge of the Nerds look. I had a list. I had a mission. ...more

Finding Beauty in a Harsh Existence

I spent a lot of time while reading Lisa Gardner's newest book, Touch and Go, trying to figure out Libby. She was broken but she also showed a resilience and strength that surprised me, as I believe it did her kidnappers. I appreciated the glimpses of her past that we received, particularly the one below:...more
