A White Girl's Thoughts on Acting White.

I am a white girl. My eyes are brown, my skin slightly olive, and in its natural state my hair is very dark brown. Where ever I live, I look like whatever the popular miscellaneous minority is; I have been mistaken for Italian in New York, Native Alaskan in Alaska, Native American in Kansas, and Puerto Rican/Cuban in Florida....more

You Know You're Aging When: Catalog Edition

Whenever I go to my parents' house, I love to look through their catalogs. They have the usual Land's End and Harry and David, but they also have a kitschy wonderland of "someone should invent that" products for seniors. (And I know they are for seniors because the catalog copy for a wrap rack says, "Remember when it was just waxed or foil? Now we have so many different wraps, and here's how to store them compactly." Also, their homepage has a drop-down just for dickies.) I am now getting the Miles Kimball catalog at my house because I made the mistake of ordering an outdoor food tent. I've recently discovered -- to my horror -- that the things I laughed about when I was eighteen now seem not so ridiculous, and I know the things I'm laughing at while 39 will probably seem like a darn tootin' good idea in thirty more years. What do you think of these products?...more

Letters From Griffin – Dearest Desirable

Dearest Desirable, I see you and me together. That image spins me around in my mind day and night. Forget the distance, we should always be together! I need you as the light in my life. I’ll gobble you up! I’m gonna suck on every tiny inch of your body. You just wait till I get a hold of you! I’m gonna reach inside like a spy… My little love goddess, if I should go insane before you return, I’ll send you my sanity in a tiny bot made from the layers of my heart....more

Do You Ever Avoid Sex?

“Honey, get your cute ass home. I made turkey chili. And I’m horny.”I’ve called my husband of ten years with a version of that message too many times to count. (When I cook, I’m quite good at it. But while my husband would prefer a daily meal, I’m more of a weekly chef.)My urgent messages are mostly in jest. My husband is usually a 40-minute drive away. And... I do want him. In that moment....more

Marriage Equality Isn’t My Fight, Or So I’ve Been Told

For months people have asked me:Why do you give a damn about gay marriage, Kelly?  I have heard things like:What does it matter to you? And I’ve sat through conversations that, when boiled down, seemed to be saying:Kelly, you’re a happily married heterosexual white woman and mother. None of this will have any impact on YOUR life.  I find the questions offensive. I find the assumptions ignorant....more

I'll Meet You In Switzerland

My favorite story about my father is something you only find in fairy tales. Because truth be told, he really was my mom’s prince. Image: Joelle Pittman via Memtolax At 24, my mom thought my 30 year-old dad was too old to date her; but nevertheless, he persistently asked her out. She eventually relented, but he could never quite convince her that he was truly serious. ...more

Are Bloggers Afraid To Talk About Sex?

I'm a sex writer.  Well, I'm more than simply a sex writer, but I'm very open about the fact that I  write about sex-related topics in my blog and in other media. I have no problem with being known as a "Sex Writer" mainly because I feel that women have the right to speak openly about sex from a sex-positive point of view, rather than a shaming one. I encourage women to speak freely about their sexuality, sexual identity, and yes, sexual behavior. I recognize, however, that doing so publicly can be rather daunting. ...more

Weddings Vs. Marriages

There is nothing more bubbly, positive and brimming with possibility than a bride. There is something so exciting about being engaged to married--something surreal. During an engagement there is this alternate universe that seems to exist, uprooting the realities of marriage that lay ahead for the couple. But let’s be plain: there is a huge difference between a wedding and a marriage....more
