DEFCON: Why Conference Harassment Matters

This weekend was DEFCON 20, the largest and most famous hacker[1] conference in the world. I didn't go to DEFCON because I'm a woman, and I don't like it when strangers grab my crotch.  ...more
I don't think I will ever understand why men think behavior like this is appropriate ANYWHERE! more

I Used to Have Ann Romney's Life. I Had Privilege.

Note: This piece was fueled by exasperation and inspired by two excellent blogs posts -- by Grace Hwang Lynch and Pamela Kripke -- that urge those who "got privilege" to name it. I used to have Ann Romney's life. The first time around I married into a family that was rich. Romney Rich....more

Of Med Errors and Brain Farts

I read the physician's order carefully, looked up the medication in the nurses’ drug book, and consulted with our pharmacist before I gave it.  While signing the medication administration record (MAR), I read the order again, and I did not see the same dose I had read the first time. Who Do You Tell -- and When -- When Your Child Has a Mental Illness?

I once read “If your child has cancer, people bring you casseroles, but if your child has a mental illness, they stay away.” I’m sad to say that we’ve faced this in our own community. Our son lost his best friend after a rage with me. Once I explained the situation to the parents, they ended their friendship. This is still painful for my son today, almost 3 years later. He still talks about this child, draws pictures of her and still tries to find her new phone number. If I could restore this relationship, I would in an instant. My heart aches for the loss he feels....more

I’m Not A Bad Mom Because I Take Medication

OK, its confession time. I take antidepressants. I took them when I was pregnant with Ronin. I took them when I pumped breastmilk for him for 13 months. I took them when I was pregnant with Ellie. And I’m still taking them while I continue to breastfeed her at 14+ months. I believe this DOES NOT make me a bad mom....more

What Happens When You Ask People Not to Say "Retard"

Let's say you have a child with disabilities who has cognitive delays, and when people jokingly use the word "retard" to call someone stupid, it bothers you. Let's say that in honor of Spread The Word To End The Word day, you decide to do a little project: For a few days you will message people on Twitter who use the word "retard" and let them know the r-word is derogatory to people with disabilities. You don't actually expect the word to disappear anytime soon or that people will instantly chop it out of their vocabularies. But maybe, just maybe, you can raise a little awareness. ...more

Tough Love vs. Child Abuse

A few months ago Dr. Phil had on his show a woman who used hot sauce and cold showers to discipline her young son whom she had adopted from Russia.  Her 10 year old daughter, 1 of the 6 children she has, video taped this as well as her screaming at and berating her son for lying to her about receiving a discipline report in school that day.  The mother was clearly not in control and the son was visibly upset, crying, voice shaking, etc.  It was difficult to watch and the majority of Dr. Phil viewers seemed appalled by this mother's behavior.  I have to say if I was that son I'd lie to that mother, too.  ...more
