Married Moms: Do You Work?

A Washington D.C. think tank is devoting some resources to find out "What's Happening to Married Mothers in the Workforce?"  It's a critically important question for a lot of reasons. While fewer women choose to marry, more than three-quarters of us are mothers by the time we're in our 40s....more

I've Taught My Daughter to Hate

“Boo! Hiss!” That is what my daughter will yell out whenever we drive by a McDonald's or a Burger King. On occasion, she will also stick out her tongue at the massively popular fast food chains. And you know what? This behavior totally warms my kale-eating, Greek yogurt-loving, grass-fed beef burger-grilling heart.  Image: greg westfall ...more

Health Secretary Nominee Sylvia Mathews Burwell: Would a Man's Appearance be Criticized This Way?

So if you haven't heard yet, my friend and Office of Management and Budget Director Sylvia Mathews Burwell was nominated for Secretary of Health and Human Services, replacing Kathleen Sebelius. It's a huge, demanding, pressure-filled responsibility, and Sylvia's experience and skills are a very good fit for the position....more

What to Do When Someone Trashes Your Appearance Online

Six months prior to our wedding, my soon-to-be husband and I sent out Save the Date cards to our guests. We felt so proud of coming up with a concept for them that was very "us" and made our friends and family laugh. Here it is: ...more

I'm Freezing and My Husband Cares More About the Heating Bill Than Me!

Dear Mouthy Housewives,Our house is always cold in the winter and my husband refuses to turn up the heat because he's cheap. Well, that's what I think, anyway. He says 69 degrees is warm enough and that I should just put on a sweater and stop complaining. It's making me really resent him and wonder why he's not concerned about my comfort. What can I do?Signed,Frozen Schmozen ...more

I Was Called a Bitch This Morning

I was called a bitch this morning.By a very nice-looking young man in a football jersey riding a homecoming parade float. This was because I didn’t stop to let the float he was on turn into the parking lot.I looked behind me. There were no cars after me. I knew the float would easily turn after I passed. So I gave a little wave of my hand. Then I heard from my open sun roof:“I wasn’t waving — I was telling you to stop, bitch.” ...more

Help! My Mother-in-Law Wants To Control Us With Her Money

Dear Mouthy Housewives, My mother-in-law uses money to control her kids. Until recently, she didn't really bother us with it. Last week she deposited money into our account after we explicitly told her we didn't need it. To be clear, we aren't wealthy by any means, but we work hard, budget and certainly don't need that type of drama in our lives. Short of hitting the ATM and throwing a wad of cash in her face (I do actually care about this woman), what can I do about this? I feel totally disrespected but also a little ridiculous for complaining about getting cash. Am I completely crazy? ...more

I Say We're Adopting, You Say...

Last week, I went over to my friend Katie's house to swim in her pool. I came in, dropped my bags and burst into tears, right there in her living room, wearing a swimsuit. The reason? I had just been at the school subbing that morning, and a woman who I'm sure is very nice in real life had said some terrible things to me about adoption. I do not understand why this is. But it's about the 90th time that it's happened to me....more
