What Did Your First Blog Design Look Like? How Has it Changed Over the Years?

Attend any blogging conference or read any "how to" on blogging, and you will be told that blog design is important. What is (and is not) important has changed over the years, of course. Do this, don't do that. Include this, don't include that, but include it again tomorrow. It's hard to keep up. My blog design has changed so many times over my 13 years of blogging, it's kind of funny to look back at it. ...more

This is What it is Like to Live Without Your Breast

My question to Glamour is this. Why did I get these emails? I don't subscribe to Glamour magazine,  and I don't follow them on any social media. Why are they emailing me? I'm sure the answer is publicity, since I write a blog that is about living after breast cancer. The question they pose, however, strikes me as being sensationalist journalism. "How would your life change without YOUR breasts?" Here is my answer, Glamour magazine. ...more

public pool predators

i focused on prevention + what mod*tot should do: -always stay where we can see each other. -scream your head off, if a stranger bothers you. -run away. tell someone safe. i wasn't prepared for a pedophile to xxx himself under the water in front of us. luckily, mod*tot didn't notice. when you're in a public pool in swimsuits in close proximity to strangers, and socialized to be polite, friendly, include others, respect elders.... public swimming pools, hot tubs + beaches are a confusing + dangerous place. ...more

Alcohol at Teen Parties: Where Is the Line of Responsibility for Parents?

Anyone catch the Today Show yesterday? Matt Lauer interviewed a couple from my neck of the woods: a Stanford professor, Bill Burnett, and his wife, Carol. The Burnetts agreed to host a party for their 17-year-old son and his friends to celebrate a football win, under the condition that no alcohol be present. The Burnetts were home when the teens arrived and brought them snacks, but allowed the teens some privacy (kids were in the basement, parents upstairs). At 11 pm police arrived, responding to an anonymous complaint that there was alcohol at the party. Although the Burnetts assured the police that no one had brought booze, the officers found that some had been snuck in....more
