Share Your Favorite Summer Memories

Happy Solstice, dear bloggers. Summer's arrival launches a season when fashion means sparkly flip-flops, the blender stays out and adventures pile up, right? As Section Editor for this here Life category, which includes travel, I'm making a request. Being the naturally curious and expressive people that bloggers are, we get outside eventually, right? Tell me about it. No, really. Tell me....more

On Blogging, Popularity Contests & Why I QUIT!

Parenthood, Actually: Empty Nests

I know that I said these same things to my own mom. "I can't wait to get out of this town." "I'm going to BE somebody." Like Kristi, I didn't realize how those words might have -- and must have -- affected my mom until I was a mother myself. This post talks about the child-parent relationship, growing up, her son and a heartbreaking story about hummingbirds. You don't want to miss this one. ...more

Do You Wear Yoga Pants -- When You're Not Doing Yoga? Is That OK?

Does this sound familiar? It's Tuesday and you don't have any plans to leave the house so you think, Eh, I'll just throw on my yoga pants today, which is fine until you realize that you need to run to the grocery/post office/coffee shop and so you do and you run into your ex/your mother-in-law/that woman from the carpool line who always looks like a supermodel. All that Yaz: Should We Get Rid of Birth Control Pills?

When it was introduced, Yasmin (and its sidekick, Yaz) was not just a birth control pill, but a girl's best friend. I mean, other pills have clinical names, like Necon 7/7/7 (my pill) or Lo-Ovral (my former pill) or Ortho TriCyclen (my former former pill) or Alesse (my former former former pill), so it's clear that they are just medicines. I didn't think I was going to hang out and talk about boys with Lo-Ovral, but I might with Yaz. Yaz is a person's name. It's kicky. I can trust my friend Yaz. ...more

"Far Away Face Girl": When You Just Don't See Yourself Like Others Do

When I was 15 years old, I was a hard-core “Thespian.”  Which basically meant I was a tool who wore black and crystals, enjoyed misery, took my big freaking tome of The Complete Works of Shakespeare with me everywhere and read interpretive poetry about my pain aloud in front of mirrors back-lit by candles and set to music like “Gloomy Renaissance Nose-Flute Quartet: The Greatest Hits” in my bedroom. ...more
