Be Safe, Young Man

My morning routine during the work week is pretty typical. I'm usually up by 5:30 a.m. and my son usually drags himself out of the bed by 6:30 a.m. There's always a constant, "Kobe, hurry up and get dressed" yell coming from my bedroom. Unlike myself, he's not a morning person. Usually, on a good day, we're out of the house by 7:15 and I drive him to school, but this morning he wanted to walk. I don't live in what some may describe as a 'bad' neighborhood. ...more

I Love The Back To School Part, Just Not The Shopping

I wish I could say that I was one of the organized back to school shoppers, but like these people standing in line waiting for the store to open at 10 a.m., I am not at all organized. I am the definition of a last minute shopper. Go ahead, google "last minute shopper", I'm sure there will be a photo of me there. I absolutely love the end of summer, and having my son back in school, but I hate the shopping aspect of it. ...more

So I get home today, and was told I was shopping from the wrong list. Woe is me.

Why Didn’t Anyone Tell Me About Hamburgers Falling From The Sky?

I think I must have lived underneath a rock as a kid because at 33 years old, I’m just learning about the book, “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”. I sat here and thought about every book I must have read as a kid that were written by Stephen King, John Carpenter, Jackie Collins and Danielle Steele. ...more

A Birthday Sans A Party

In exactly 17 days, my son isturning 10. In exactly 17 days, we will not have a birthday party as usual and he doesn’t mind that at all. The first & last birthday party I had for my son was for his 1st birthday. I still don’t think it qualified as a party, till this day. There was cake, ice cream & three of my girlfriends and another 1 year old child. To say that it was small and quaint would be an understatement.  The only memories of that party are the ones that the photos can provide the both of us. ...more

That is definitely a great birthday present! I didn't have a birthday party until I hit ... more

The Separation of Church & Household

Growing up, religion was something like a big deal in our household. Both of my parents were active in the church. My father played the bass in the church’s band and my mother was always the one to help out in the nursery. We belonged to a very strict Pentecostal church and when I look back at it now, I see how people can be turned off by religion. There were so many ‘you can’t do this’ & ‘you can’t do that’ going on in the church. Women couldn’t wear pants, make-up or jewelry. Kids were to be seen and not heard. ...more

Mommy, You Sat On Luke (again)!

At the age of 3, my son Jaden, had a friend named Luke. Everywhere we went, Luke wasn’t far behind. In the morning, Luke was there while my son was getting ready for school. In the afternoon, Luke was sitting right next to him while he was doing his homework. It was Luke, who drew a smiley face of the living room wall. It was also Luke, who was responsible for spilling a gallon of milk one day. ...more
