How to Manage a Needle Phobia

Becky is far from alone when it comes a childhood fear of needles that followed her right into adulthood. In a 2001 Gallup poll of how much people fear various things, nearly one-fifth (21%) said, "needles and shots." Snakes were number one on the list (50%). Needles and shots were sixth, just ahead of mice (20%) and just behind spiders and insects (26%). Being afraid of needles does not mean you are weak-minded or a wimp. It's an officially recognized phobia. People who are needle phobic may feel faint or light headed or even have a panic attack at just thought of a needle. ...more

Let's practice Kindness this New Year

I don't know about you, but I'm weary of the news headlines, much less of reading the details that go along with those headlines. I'm weary of hearing about death and violence and war. Those things, it seems, will always be with us unfortunately, but I'm ready to read news headlines of the "good stuff" we do for one another...for I know that we do good stuff....more

I'm Not Paid To Look Good, And I'm Thankful For That

Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of a documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival. I'm not usually a festival-goer or a Hollywood party type, but this documentary is special: It's about a case that my husband and I worked on, and my husband, as one of the lead defense attorneys in the case, is featured pretty prominently in it. I'm not in the film, but last week I authored the petition for certiorari that we submitted to the United States Supreme Court. (Click on the links here to read more about ...more

Joan Rivers Has Become The Thing That You Know When You See It

Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once famously defined obscenity as something he knows when he sees. The "you know it when you see it" defense is indefinable, but yet people generally agree there are lines in society. We know when they've been crossed. We just know. Recently Joan Rivers' positively awful behavior rendered Joan herself as that indefinable thing. She's gone from critical to contemptible, and now we must throw our collective hands up and beg her to please just stop. Just stop. Really. You're not funny at all. To anyone. ...more

What Happens at Grandma's Stays at Grandma's

My two granddaughters, ages six and four, came to play with me while their parents were out of town. The first ten minutes were splendid. No screaming, no urgent demands for gourmet food, and no poop on the dining table. Then all hell broke loose. Mr. Bill and the Waldorf doll opened the Crown Royal, the Potato Head cowboy seduced Ms. Carrot with chocolates and wine, and the runaway bunny ran away but his mommy didn’t care. ...more
