The Pixie Cut: Why I Went Short (Would You?)

A few weeks ago I went to a salon, pulled my hair back in a ponytail and asked the hairdresser to cut it off. What she placed in my hand was 15 inches of my hair tied neatly in a yellow hairband. That hair is on its way to Locks of Love, an organization that provides hairpieces to economically disadvantaged children suffering from long term medical hair loss. A friend of mine grows her hair out the requisite 12 inches every couple of years and then cuts it off to donate, and I've always admired her for it....more

Are You Beautiful?

Do you ever wonder if any women are happy with the way they look? Is it even possible? The cosmetics industry and traditional fashion media would have us think that the answer is no; after all, they make their money playing on our fears about our appearance -- and offering us salvation in the form of eye cream and skinny jeans....more

I'm happy with the way I look for the most part. I think that I am pretty. But I don't think ... more

Laura Bennett of "Project Runway" Cuts Her Own Hair (Yes, Really!)

Laura Bennett is easily my favorite "Project Runway" contestant ever, both for her clean, classic designs and for her willingness to speak up when it mattered (Bennett issued an eleventh-hour challenge of Season 3 winner Jeffrey Sebelia's final collection, assserting that he hadn't done his finishing work himself). She managed all this while pregnant with her sixth child -- and she looked great the entire time. ...more

She seemed really abrasive on the show and I guess that's why I didn't like her so much (hers ... more

Personal Style Starts with Confidence (and a Great Red Lipstick)

Confidence has always been an elusive thing for me. I try to project it, but it is more a fabrication than a true reflection of my state of mind. In all things, I care too much what other people think of me. The smallest of criticisms is often enough to send me reeling for days. I aim to please, even as I try not to. It's a constant battle between the self-assuredness I wish I had and the occasionally crippling insecurity that grips me....more

That makes a lot of sense (and I love how eloquently you put it) and is reflective of my own ... more

Five DIY Holiday Beauty Gifts

My mom has recently gotten really into DIY beauty products. She's raiding the kitchen for everything from bananas, avocados and honey for hair conditioner to my grandmother's organic rose bush for homemade rose water. And her hair and skin actually look really, really good lately. But most people have trouble wrapping their heads around putting, well, food on the top of their head. But there are a lot of great homemade beauty products that can be prettily packaged and make wonderful gifts. Much better than, say, half an avocado, a couple of egg yolks and a plastic shower cap....more

Repairing Shoes - What A Cobbler Can Do For You

I may not have a lot of money, but I rarely buy cheap shoes. I only buy shoes I absolutely love, and they're usually not cheap. And because of that, I can't afford to buy a lot of shoes and the ones I have get worn to the point of disrepair. The outsole wears thin, the heel breaks or wears down, embelishments fall off and leather gets scuffed....more

Butter London Nail Laquer - A Recession Friendly "Wardrobe" Update

As my purse strings clinch tighter and tighter I've been trying to find new ways to update my wardrobe - to make it fun and exciting for me even on a serious budget - and I've found that nail polish is the cheapest way to fill that little hole in my fashionista heart. And Butter London's line of 3 Free Laquers, which contain no formaldehyde, no toluene and no dibutyl phthalate, is full of fun, edgy colors that are perfect for lending just that little bit of pop to that old thing hanging at the back of your closet. Be forewarned, however, these colors are not for the faint of heart. ...more

Finding a Good, Green Facial Cleanser

So here's the deal: I've finally sucked every last foaming goodness out of my Shiseido Pureness Foaming Cleansing Fluid and now I do not know what to do. I love this cleanser. I've used it for years and years, but I've made a commitment to start buying greener, more natural products and though it does contain "pureness" in the name, Shiseido is not, I think, a green brand. So. I need a new cleanser. A new, green cleanser. And that is where all you lovely people come in.  ...more
