It Was A Very Good Year

As another year draws to an end and the promise of a new year is on the horizon, I’d like to take a moment to thank you all for being a part of my life. 2012 wasn’t a year of milestone events, but rather a year filled with moments that collectively created memories that I cherish.  Four mornings each week I can count on walking the trails with you. We spend the hour sharing, learning and laughing. Once a month, as I’ve done for the last fourteen years, I spend a couple of hours with you discussing our selected book....more

You Make Me Feel Like Dancing: March Madness Edition

I was raised on a steady diet of college basketball. More specifically, UCLA Bruin Basketball.  No big stretch- my parents met over 60 years ago while my mother was a student at UCLA. It was easy being a fan in the John Wooden years- 10 National Championships, long undefeated streaks, a roster of future NBA Hall of Famers. Coach Wooden retired in 1975, ostensibly when Bill Walton graduated....more

Words With Friends

I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

This weekend marks a significant anniversary in my life. My life was saved exactly half a lifetime ago. I was 27 years old 27 years ago when I was diagnosed with colon cancer. I had no family history. I was young , healthy and fit- not exactly a high risk candidate. Yet there I was, spending the 1984 holiday season being probed and tested for a variety of symptoms that had grown too worrisome  to ignore. Sudden weight loss ( at 27  I wasn't going to question  that one !), fatigue and crippling abdominal pain were more than just stress due to a hectic season and home remodel....more

Love is a Many Splendored Thing

The Empty Nesters had the great pleasure of attending the wedding of a young woman we have known since she was in kindergarten. We've celebrated countless birthdays and holidays with our friends and their families and now we find ourselves at the next stage- the weddings. We sat outside under the setting Southern California sun, listening to the orchestra play Marry Me by Train as the wedding party made their way down the flower strewn aisle....more

The Dog Days Are Over

The term  Dog Days refers to the hottest, and most sultry days of summer. In the Northern Hemisphere they usually  occur between July and September. The name comes from the ancient belief that Sirius, The Dog Star, in its close proximity to the sun was responsible for the hot weather. Here in Los Angeles the Dog Days arrived early this year. This past weekend the temperatures hit triple digits in the inland areas. Yet the beaches were blanketed by a thick marine layer and the sun didn't shine through until mid afternoon....more

Only the Good Die Young

We are only a couple of weeks into 2011, still high on the possibilities a new year brings. The recent tragedy in Tucson, Arizona smacked us in the face with the fragility of life. 6 innocent people, including a nine year old girl dead, and a dozen others injured including United States Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who remains in serious condition after miraculously surviving a gunshot wound to the head. A deranged individual's action instantly changed the lives of the families and society as a whole....more

Mourning a Mother

Mourning A Mother The empty nesters join the entire country in mourning the passing of Elizabeth Edwards. A lawyer, political wife, writer, and most importantly mother of 4, Elizabeth lost her valiant battle with metastatic cancer this morning with her family, including estranged husband John, by her side. Whatever we think of John and his despicable behavior, he is the father of their children. It will now be his responsibility to raise their two youngest , Emma Claire 12, and Jack 10. The Edwards story has been all over the media....more

All the Leaves Are Brown

All The Leaves Are Brown The past few weeks have been busy ones for the empty nesters. Living in Los Angeles can bring unique experiences to your daily routine. You never know when a movie or TV star might be behind you in line at your local Starbucks or at the bank. Right before the Emmy Awards, Claudia was invited to display her adorable kids clothing designs (claudiabethB.etsy.com) one of the swag suites....more
