Surprising Sex Issue That Shouldn't Exist

I don't know if I am naive, but I am a little surprised that in 2012 there are still guilt-related sex issues roaming around. We've had a Sexual Revolution, the PlayBoy empire, the birth of YouPorn.com, the Jersey Shore and Fifty Shades of Grey ... yet some women still carry guilt. And they don't talk about it: they just accept that maybe they can't/won't have orgasms. Oh, no....more

I've Been Lying to Myself: My Child Is Spoiled

"I think we're spoiling her," he replied. "She never asks for anything because she doesn't know what it's like not to have everything." When my mother-in-law was visiting us last August, she looked around E's room with a mixture of wonder and confusion. "When I was a kid, we were so poor we had nothing...just one doll, one puzzle, one book. I can't imagine what it's like to grow up with all this stuff." I looked around at the bins of stuffed animals, the giant bookcase stuffed with books, the cabinets full of blocks and puzzles and crayons and games. It hadn't seemed excessive to me before. It was just what she had. It was what every kid we knew had....more

Does Your Blog No Longer Fit You?

Except that I have realized lately that I seem to be telling a very different story from the one that I started to tell almost three years ago. Back then the story was about getting remarried and lots and lots of parenting. Principessa this, Principessa that. A little fitness thrown in here and there, but mostly, mom-mommy-parenting stuff. Which of course is not what I am writing about anymore. Or at least, not primarily. Which begs the question...is Ciao Mom even the appropriate name of this space? ...more

On Tattooing, Part 1

I got my first tattoo when I was 23 going on 24. I knew exactly what I wanted – a sketched horse head on my lower right leg – but it took me four years to find the right image and the right artist....more

Turning In My Crunchy Card

So, you know how you're at work, and you're talking to a coworker, and they're all, "Yeah, I know I said I'd do that for you, but I'm just so busy!" and you're like, "I know, me too.  It's just that..." and they say, "No, I'm really BUSY!"  and you're thinking, "YEAH I KNOW MAN WE'RE ALL BUSY, WE'RE AT WORK," because apparently this bitch thinks she's some sort of special kind of busy that you can't possibly understand?Yeah.  Get ready for a whole lot of that in this post....more

Midlife and Tattoos: Why I Ink

No, I am not barreling at the speed of light toward a midlife crisis, I'd like to squash that idea right now.Yes, I realize that at 40-something many people are removing their tattoos not getting them. No, I am not desperately clinging to my youth by pretending to be edgy and cool - I'm ALREADY edgy and cool, just ask my kids and then ignore their snorts and eye-rolling. Yes, I may possibly be out of my mind, but the crazy is what keeps y'all coming back for more so I'm  unleashing a whirling dervish of it here in today's post. You're welcome....more
