I Got My Feelings Hurt on the Internet

Last week, my editors at Woman's Day shouted out one of my blog posts on their Facebook page, and it got a lot of comment. The piece was titled "5 Big Unexpected Bonuses from My Divorce" and it outlined some of the things I've really learned to enjoy about my new single life, such as kid-free weekends and redecorating to my own tastes, etc. The feedback from my readers was mostly positive, but I had a few who jumped on to let me know how selfish I was. Why did I even get married in the first place? Grow up! ...more

Menopause: My Brain Is Full of Holes

My boyfriend and I are talking movies. Me: “What’s that film where Mira Sorvino plays the stripper?” Him: “Marisa Tomei?” Me: “Did I just say 'Mira Sorvino'?” My 22-year-old daughter and I are on our way to dinner after her ice hockey game. Me: “You know who played really well tonight?” Her: “Who?” Me: “Um, you know, she’s a defenseman.” Her: “Which one? Hailey?” Pause. ...more

If He’s Dumb Enough to Walk Away, Be Smart Enough to Let Him Go

I saw this photo of a quote on Facebook this morning, “If he’s dumb enough to walk away, be smart enough to let him go.” I shared it without adding any extra comments. Will Bartender Boy see it? Maybe, maybe not....more

13 of the Best Blogger Cookbooks of 2013

2013 was a banner year for cookbooks -- and for cookbooks by bloggers, in particular. In fact, there were so many excellent choices this year that I had to limit my choices JUST to my favorites by some of the many, many bloggers in the BlogHer Publishing Network, or you'd have been here all day. ...more

Duck, Duck, Goose: Hank Shaw on Cooking Waterfowl and His Truly Epic Book Tour

Hank Shaw doesn't do things the easy way. That's a given, considering that he's been blogging since 2007 at Hunter Angler Gardener Cook, sharing recipes and techniques for the food he eats -- nearly 100% of it hunted, fished, foraged, or grown himself; the rest sustainably raised by real people. ...more
What a great interview, thanks Julie! Hank is truly inspirational. more

ANA Food Allergies: Halloween Could Kill My Child

This morning I am mad. Really mad. I am mad because I am hurt. You see, my son is a high school sophomore. He is an active member of his school. He has spoken at local Board of Supervisor and Board of Education meetings regarding issues near to his heart. He plays in the marching band (he's the best one out there if you ask me or his dad!) He swims on a summer swim team. He volunteers at a local middle school band camp during the summer. He volunteered out of state at a food allergy camp last summer, giving up a week of his personal time to show these children a great, safe time!...more

The Heart Wants What It Wants, Even When It Hurts

It always started this way, with a three word text message and the awaited response.  It would come from either of us, out of the blue and then we would wait to see if the other had moved on to someone new.  I would anxiously hope not to be rejected.  I dreaded the day his four-word response would change....more

Why Mocking Miss Utah Distracts Us From the Real Issues

This year’s Miss USA pageant brought the world another opportunity to rip a woman to shreds when Miss Utah, 21-year-old Marissa Powell, failed to coherently answer a current events question. Yes, the question was on a topic that directly impacts women. Yes, she could have done better. But, damn, can we just give her a break?...more

'American Idol' Recap: The Top 6 Sing Two Songs

My biggest complaint last time American Idol had four judges was that they spent WAY too much time yapping, and not enough time singing. So I was thrilled to see that we heard two songs per contestant this week, for the entire Top 6. The first song was from the Bacharach and David songbook, and the second was a song the singers wish they had written. ...more

American Idol Recap: The Top 8 Visit the Motor City, Musically Speaking

Welcome to the American Idol and their annual visit to the Motor City, aka Detroit, aka Motown. And their annual mentor-episode with Smokey Robinson.I think other cities must get jealous. Why doesn't American Idol visit Nashville? Or Memphis? Or the East Village? Or Liverpool? You know what else gets jealous? Keith's hair. Or at the very least his highlights got jealous of Nikki's roots and decided to make their own over-the-top appearance. Who would have predicted Mariah Carey would have the lowest-maintenance beauty routine on the judge's panel?...more
I love these recaps Elisa! I totally agree. more
