Facebook Forces Mobile Users to Download Messenger App to Access Facebook Messages

Facebook announced today that you'll need to download a second app in order to access Facebook messages from your smartphone. This is both for your benefit -- faster app speed for their main app since it won't be weighed down by messages -- but moreso Facebook's benefit: why use any other messaging app when you need to download Facebook's regardless if you want to access that Facebook feature? It's like colonizing your phone, one app at a time. ...more

I Don't Need a Man to Walk Me to My Car. But I Want One.

One of the reasons I chose to live in this small town was its low crime rate. I know most of my neighbors (even if some of them aren't my favorite people in the world), and I've never felt unsafe. I often walk my dogs late at night right through the middle of downtown without a second thought in regards to my safety....more

Can I Be a Feminist If I Don't Agree With You?

I spent the weekend with some beautiful women. They were intelligent (like getting-into-the-best-business-school-in-the-country smart), driven (like being one of only a small group of women in their industry) and engaged (like being a member of the Peace Corps and a senior-level executive in the federal government.) Despite being heavy hitters in their fields, they embraced my lowly but admired profession of a blogger covering the wine-drinking and play date scene....more

Wedding Hashtags: #AwesomeIdea or #DoingTooMuch?

In the age of what some consider to be "over-sharing" and having instant access to, well, everything, it is no surprise that more couples are taking to social media to share the joy of their wedding celebrations. As I comb through Facebook, blogs, Twitter, and Pinterest, I almost feel like I'm a guest at weddings around the world. No longer do couples have to wait for their $2500 photography packages to be emailed and delivered; guests can now share wedding ceremonies with the world in real time....more

How Teaching my Children Not to Be Afraid Changed Me

Last week I picked my daughters and a friend of theirs up from school. We made a pit stop at our favorite taco truck in front of a car wash on Westwood and Santa Monica Boulevards. As we waited in line to order, Clare noticed a homeless man coming our direction. ...more

The Truth About Combined Finances

This whole “what’s mine is yours” concept seems all la la la and fairy dust and stuff, but in reality I find it’s more like, “I would like to share, but at the same time, this sucks a little bit too.” My husband and I have been together for nine and a half years, married for almost three, and we are STILL getting the hang of this combined finances thing. Why? Because it’s not a teddy bear’s picnic--it’s real life. ...more

How Come I'm the Only One Who Kept My Maiden Name?

My name is Christie O’Brien Tate. It's the name I’ve had all my life.  It will always be my name, even though I'm married with two children, and I'm the only one in my household with the last name Tate.  For as long as I can remember, I planned to keep my maiden name.  Long before I read the work of Betty Friedan or Catharine MacKinnon, I knew I wanted my name to stay with me. Sometimes when people ask me why I kept my maiden name, I joke that I'm horrible with paperwork, so there's no way I was going to schlep down to the DMV to update my driver’s license. ...more
