A Resource Guide for Creative Inspiration

I usually assume that since I'm online 24/7 that everyone else is too and therefore knows all of the same sites and magazines and blogs and social media outlets for all things fashion, design, and beauty. But alas, I am probably in a very small percentage of women who seek out this creative inspiration so frequently. Or maybe I'm not? ...more

Keep Excel to yourself

Last Sunday, my husband and two other gentlemen from church had to give announcements. The first, a businessman and the second, an attorney, each spoke sans notes. Sean, though, got up and proudly flashed his paper, saying, “I’m an engineer and I use notes!” He proceeded to go down his list, hit all his points and sit down. (Trust me when I say he would not have taken his seat if he hadn’t ticked off each point.)...more

VeggieTales' The Little Drummer Boy

Not long after our first was born, a round little tomato and his funny cucumber friend entered our lives. Michael, being 1, wasn’t terribly impressed, but my husband and I loved Bob and Larry instantly.  We can still sing all the songs from that first release, Where is God When I’m Scared?, and the story of Daniel, with Larry playing the lead, is my all-time favorite VeggieTales story.  “Oh no, whatcha gonna do? The king likes Daniel more than me and you…”...more

CPS Showed Up at My Door: An On-Going Lesson in Consequences

I received a knock on my door this afternoon, and when I answered it I was met by a small, blonde woman who announced that she was from child protective services and she needed to talk to me. If you've never had that experience (and I hope you never have), let me try to describe how it feels. Your heart starts racing. Your mind starts spinning, frantically trying to recall something -- anything -- that could warrant a visit from CPS. I was in full panic mode, but trying my very best to hold it together. Or to at least not pass out....more

Big Bang Theory

When I was a kid, my stylist recommended bangs all the time. She would sit me down in the kitchen chair - the one with brown faux leather and two wooden steps that folded out to create a ladder/chair, throw an apron over me, and ever so slowly use the kitchen scissors to cut a clean flat line across my wet hair. I can still feel the slightly ticklish, slightly menacing cold metal above my eyebrows. I can also hear the delicate, crisp cut of my hair and the metal swishing sound inside my head....more

Should San Francisco Ban Circumcision?

A while back, I wrote a hot post -- "A Case Against Circumcision" -- about a super controversial issue which CNN reports is showing up in the limelight now that a group seeking to ban circumcision of any male younger than 18 in San Francisco has succeeded in getting their controversial measure on the November ballot. ...more
