I've Taught My Daughter to Hate

“Boo! Hiss!” That is what my daughter will yell out whenever we drive by a McDonald's or a Burger King. On occasion, she will also stick out her tongue at the massively popular fast food chains. And you know what? This behavior totally warms my kale-eating, Greek yogurt-loving, grass-fed beef burger-grilling heart.  Image: greg westfall ...more

Stop With Your Memes: I'm The One Who Cares

I'm going to start this with a vent: I can't stand those "No one cares" memes.  You know, the ones that say "No one cares what you did at the gym today" or "No one cares about what you made for dinner."  Kids, pets, food, workouts ... everyone seems to have something they don't want to see people posting about....more

The "#Selfie" Generation

I'm worried for The Selfie Generation. You know what a "selfie" is, don't you? It's when people take pictures of themselves, most often doing duck face and then, of course, hashtagging it (when did "hashtag" become a verb?) as, "#selfie" on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. There's usually no occasion for it and there is no limit in frequency. ...more

AshleyGate: How Mitch McConnell Planned to Smear Ashley Judd

If you think politics is dirty, you’re probably going to think it’s even more dirty after reading this story. It’s so outrageous that you might feel compelled to throw up, or take a shower, or, at the very least, call your senator. Yes, I'm talking about the Mother Jones story with tapes of Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell and his staff discussing how to attack Ashley Judd as "unbalanced." ...more

Would This Have Happened If A Man Had Been There?

I'd like to tell you a story.Once upon a time, there was a group of girls who had reached the end of a lovely evening out.  They decided, it being a freezing night in England, that their best bet would be to take the bus back home.  And for about half the ride, it was fine, until at one stop, a man got on the bus.  ...more

Lying About Birth: Yes, Kate Winslet Should Feel Ashamed

A friend recently brought to my attention, via Facebook, that Kate Winslet apparently just came out as having lied about having a natural childbirth when in fact she had an emergency c-section. She was embarrassed about having had the section. There seems to be a “c-sections are nothing to be embarrassed about” movement stirring up over this which I kind of think is ridiculous....more

I Don't Want to Volunteer at School and You Can't Make Me

Dear Mouthy Housewives, My daughter just started First Grade last week and everything is going well except for one thing. The one thing being that most of the other moms at the school are SAHMs (like me) and they volunteer in the classroom all of the time. I'm actually trying to start a small home-based business during the hours she's in school and want to devote my free time to that. But I've already had some of them pressure me or give me guilt trips because I haven't signed up to help out....more

Lessons Learned from Weekly Writing Exercises

Weekly writing exercises aren't quite as difficult for me as daily morning pages, but I'll admit that I still struggle with them. Yet I still find myself thinking about the writing prompts in Julia Cameron's My Artist's Way Toolkit, even if I don't put a pen to paper. I'm not always good at putting my thoughts down but these exercises are still teaching me some important lessons....more

What Do You Do When Your Child Says Scary Things?

Our oldest son has always been a bit... intense. Like me, he's dramatic, and emotional, and vocal about his feelings. It's a temperament I can relate to, but when combined with the honesty of a young child, it can sometimes be disconcerting. When his younger brother became a toddler, and they participated in more active play together, they of course began to fight. And that's when it started. "I want to HURT him!" "I want to KICK him!" "I want to BITE/HIT/SCRATCH him!!!" This was not the loving brotherly relationship we were hoping for. And worse, it was scary to hear him say these things....more
