New Kansas Law Could Allow Spanking of Children that Causes Redness and Bruising: Say What?

A few months ago, I was at a "mommy's night" house party with some women I don't know very well. As the wine flowed, so did the conversation, each of us bringing to the table our recent anecdotes, exciting stories and frustrations. At some point, one of the women started in on how much her children were annoying her lately. She related stories of back talk, open defiance and sibling in-fighting, and we all nodded our heads sympathetically. Then she said something that made my blood run cold: "My hand actually hurts from all the spankings I've had to give lately." ...more
Such a horrible horrible idea! I do love a good yell, but spanking? Slippery slope. Great piece. more

My Elusive Quest For Mom Friends: Are One or Two Friends Okay?

Lately, I’ve read several good articles and blog pieces about the difficulty of making new mom friends. I can identify with these authors because last year seemed to be my year of constant angst about friendships. Do I have enough friends? How can I make new friends? Does it really matter? BFFs & Mean Girls: Why Best Friends Forever Can Be Harmful to Girls

Up until recently, I didn’t pay much attention to the term “BFF” or Best Friend Forever. I’ve seen the term used on mom blogs and elsewhere, but the few times I’ve paid attention to it, I assumed it was a harmless, trendy term for friendship. That was until my 11 year-old daughter started coming home from school mocking the term and saying other girls use it to exclude classmates and form cliques....more

A Mother's Sexuality: Taking Back MILF

Why is it that society has no problem joking about the MILF (Mom I'd Like to F*ck), but as soon as a mother shows any sign of owning her sexuality, the first reaction is to question whether she's a fit parent? Where did this chasm between motherhood and sexuality come from? Don't people know that sex is how a lot of our kids come to be? ...more
