Some See My Son as Black, Even Though He Is Mixed-Race

I confess to feeling safe because my kids’ biracial genes have given them lighter skin, but my family cannot run away from racism....more

The Time I Blew a Crazy Amount of Cash on Discontinued Lipstick

We've all been there: Faithful to a particular cosmetic item; loyal as can be. We've grown to depend on it day in and day out, and it has come through for us—pun intended—with flying colors. Then, one day...Poof! In comes word that said item has been discontinued....more

I Was Told I Wasn't "Pretty" On A First Date

I can honestly say that I have been on some of the worst dates in the history of the world.  And, of course, I totally checked the history of the world before I made that claim to fame.  Today, I’m going to share one of my more treasured memories with you. You may want to sit down for this one.  Scratch that.  Grab your laptop, find a friggin’ bed and lay down.  Yeah, it’s that bad....more

Looking for Multiracial TV Characters I Can Show My Biracial Kids

Recent media on media coverage of the upcoming Fall Television Season (does TV even still have seasons? Doesn't it feel like new shows are just constantly premiering?) has focused heavily on television becoming a lot less "whitewashed," mostly due to the multiple productions of Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy) and a few others, including upcoming pilots with Hispanic and Asian leads. ...more

Why 'Games for Women' Has Given Me Rage Face

I grew up with video games.  My family wasn't wealthy, but my two older brothers and I saved our pennies and my father agreed to pitch in so we could buy our first gaming system: a TI-99/4A.  Image Credit: Quagmire's Photos via Flickr I played Parsec, Hunt the Wumpus, and Alpiner with the best of them. As time passed, we continued to save our pennies so we could upgrade our game systems and purchase more games. ...more

Meatless Monday: One-Pot Wonder Tomato Basil Pasta

This recipe for One-Pot Wonder Tomato Basil Pasta from my friend Donna at Apron Strings has been shared and pinned over and over since Donna posted it, so I probably should apologize for being so slow to feature it here. The 10 Worst Prom Dresses of 2014

Scrolling through some popular prom dress sites today, I witnessed crimes against fashion, not to mention propriety. I saw perfectly adorable trends like peplums, neons, ruffles, and pastels massacred in cold blood. I saw highly dubious trends like Dynasty-esque beading, cutouts, ruffles, and the inexplicable (to me, anyway) pageant-ish ballgown look cross the line from tasteless to felonious. And—oh, the humanity—THE COST. Yes, cold hard cash is the motive for these crimes. ...more

Nancy Kerrigan & Tonya Harding: 20 Years Later

The recent announcement that Ashley Wagner was named to the U.S. figure skating team was big news. But outside the rink, the controversy over the choice of Wagner over fellow skater Mirai Nagasu barely caused a ripple. This was nothing like the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan figure skating scandal 20 years ago  --  a scandal that ESPN named  as one of its most memorable sports moments of the 20th century....more
