The Talk

I met a man outside the hair salon the other day. He came out on the porch where I was sitting with the kids to tell me how beautiful they were. They grow so quickly, he told me. Cherish your time now. It's something I hear often, from older parents, an admonition I never take lightly because it's something I already know: this time together, when they're tiny and funny, curious and needy, is finite. A nostalgic sap like me, of course I know it's slipping quickly. ...more

The 500 Blog Posts That Changed My Career

Sometime in June 2010, I pushed the "Publish" button on the 500th post on my blog. Those 500 blog posts changed my life – by helping me reinvent my career. In two and a half years, I went from stay at home mom to full-time journalist and blogger making a lot more than I ever did as a staff writer at a major daily newspaper. And it all happened because I blogged. ...more

Bloggers Sing Their Hearts Out for Christmahanukwanzaakah

For the 6th year running, Neil Kramer from Citizen of the Month has kicked off his annual Christmahanukwanzaakah online concert, and for the 6th year running, I've chickened out of performing my rendition of "Maoz Tzur." Even though I know most of us don't have a voice that rivals Buble, I still get self-conscious over the idea of sitting down with a Flip camera and my guitar and warbling in Hebrew. So I miss out. But thankfully, there are tons of people who didn't miss out, and the concert is a great way to see some of your favourite bloggers in a completely different light. ...more

Hair and Femininity: I Cut My Hair and Opened My Eyes

I decided to take the leap. My hair wasn't making me look fatter or skinnier or complementing really anything about me -- it's never been my best feature, it is just my damn hair. I felt good about it, I reminded myself, as I crumpled my picture of Michelle Williams in my sweating fists. ...more

Lobster: A Love Story

It’s been quite a while now since I took these lewd and indecent photos of ravaged lobster carcasses. I’ve been practically dying to share them with you, because who doesn’t want to see something like that? And even more than that, I’ve been busting at the seams to teach you how to pick every last morsel of sweet, tender meat from the innermost cartilage of a lobster body like your children’s lives depended on the meager income you’d earn from it. I want to be the one to teach you that, because you never really forget a person who profoundly changes the way you see the world. It’s selfish, I know, but it’s also very generous of me....more

Hey, Baby! Can We Stop Street Harassment?

[How many times have you or your friends--or your daughter--confronted being hooted at or leered at by some sweet-talking guy in public? Or a pack of guys? Although statistics are hard to come by, it's hardly a foreign experience. The question is, what should we do about it? British blogger Sian and Crooked Rib has some thoughts and why we should take street harassment seriously. What do you think?--Mona] She writes: ...more

The march of time. On my face.

While I got lucky in life on many fronts, aging slowly was not one of them. Nine days shy of 40, my face is cracked and creased and increasingly mottled with age spots. There are long afternoons when I can almost feel the pull of gravity beneath my eyes and mornings when I startle at my own reflection. My insidesclosed shop two years ago, by some accounts a good decade ahead of schedule, and emptied my natural hormone tank. ...more
