Are Pinterest Valentines Making Us Devalue Our Kids' Ideas?

Rumor has it that Valentine's Day is this week. I know this because my Instagram feed is full of the craftiest, shiniest, glitteriest, cutest-saying-est Valentines I have ever seen. Anne at Floral Showers decided to go with the heart-shaped melted crayon craft for her daughter to give out, complete with a cute little saying that she found online. Her daughter had a different idea, but scrapped it when Anne raised an eyebrow. It got Anne thinking about many things we teach our kids about giving and their own ideas. It's definitely a must-read for this holiday. ...more

Child Free Flights and Restaurants

Even as a single woman, I’ve never had much of a problem with children on airplanes. I have, however, seen a man so drunk he vomited all over his seat (and the one in front of him) and listened to him insult the staff around him with slurred speech. He was handcuffed to the seat behind us and we had to put up with that smell for the remaining four hours of the flight....more

Last week Greta had a sore throat that wasn't going away, so we went to the doctor to get a strep test. We've been at the doctor a lot this winter -- recurring sore throats that are sometimes strep, sometimes not.   We have spent a lot of time sitting in the exam room, waiting for the results of the strep culture. ...more

The Return From Iraq: When Coming Home Is Not Homecoming

Intact. We use it when “things” are “not broken,” when they are still “working.” And we use it sometimes to gloss over the hidden fissures…the cracks that deepen under stress and strain. My husband returned from Iraq on October 31, 2006 -- four and a half years ago. My husband, for whom I had waited so many months, came home but he never had a homecoming. He returned intact but with a crucial piece missing -- his men. ...more
