The Day I Heard Her Dad Tell Her, "Not Bad for a Girl"

"Not bad for a girl." It made me cringe from the top of my head down the tips of my blue-painted toenails. Words spoken by a father to his little girl about her belt promotion in karate. It wasn't meant to be mean. He was just kidding. It was their little inside joke. He couldn't be prouder, actually. But he still said the words. And she still heard them. ...more

8 Things to Do With Your Submission If It Gets Rejected

Anyone who has been submitting writing for any length of time has most likely gotten a rejection (or just never heard back) from a site they submitted to. I've had plenty! Don't get frustrated; the universe is just telling you it belongs somewhere else (or so I tell myself). Be sure to keep track of where you have submitted things to help you manage what to do with it if you get a rejection or no response. Here are some options for your rejected posts that may end up being even better than your original submission intent! ...more

My Little Brother Just Turned 40

My little brother turned 40 the other day. That makes me 43, I hate to say.I feel older than that, my life's over I'm fearing. What's that you say? I'm losing my hearing.I remember us as kids playing outside.Making leaf houses and on bikes we would ride.We played Circus Atari, killing the stick man with glee. We'd practice stunts with him balanced on my knee.I laughed at his Ken doll with its girl-like "down there"...Then my Barbie dolls would suddenly be missing their hair....more

Beyoncé! Why I Need Her New ' 7/11' Video To Break the Internet

It's been a rough week.   Kim Kardashian's oily backside and everyone's reenactments of her Paper Mag photos are still trying to break the internet.  We're still waiting for a grand jury indictment announcement in Ferguson, where Gov. Jay Nixon has already issued a state of emergency and police are mobilizing.  ...more

10 Bloggers Respond to Mrs. Hall's Letter with Thoughts on Slut-Shaming, Respect, and Selfies

As a mom of two boys, I have high hopes of teaching them many important lessons. Things like compassion and acceptance, the importance of education and hard work, the benefit of a leap of faith versus never trying due to fear of failure, and of course, respect. Respect remains one of those Big Things in our home -- for all people, in all ways, both physically and emotionally. You don't get to be a jerk just because you think you can, neither do you get to put your hands on someone else. As such, my gut-reaction to the now viral letter that Mrs. Hall wrote to teenage girls posting "seductive" selfies on Instagram and thus tempting her precious sons... well... I'm having a hard time with the general concept. ...more

Separation Anxiety: When Everyone Else Is Divorcing

The girls have been struggling with a kind of separation anxiety lately. There have been more than five announcements of separations/divorce from couples they know over the last year. When it first began, it was easy enough to gently explain that sometimes, like with being sisters, you need to get a little space or take a break. They would nod softly, ask if Sean and I were okay, and then move on to the next thing. I was hanging out with Finley one day and she said, “Mom, do I have a stepmom?” ...more
