Beneath a Cloudless Sky: Believing in Change

Shortly after we moved into our house in 1996, Luisa and I hung a rainbow flag off the front of our house.  It felt like staking a claim - we were creating a home together - and every day I'd come home from work and smile as I saw that flag fluttering in the wind. And then one day, we came home to find that the flag had been burned. ...more

Log Cabin at the RNC: It’s About Showing Up

A political party’s platform is a strange document. It purports to represent the consensus and ideals of a massive organization, but in reality, it tends to represent only party “purists” and rarely determines policy. So then why would Log Cabin Republicans and other advocacy groups, including the Family Research Council, devote serious time and energy to attempting to influence a document that few people ever even read?...more

Gay Dads and Kids Terrorized in their Home

Felix Bermea and his partner, Roy, believe they are being targeted for being a minority family in the neighborhood. Bermea is concerned that the police have not acted with enough concern or speed in helping the family, and worries that authorities care less than they might if the situation involved a white, heterosexual family like the majority of their neighbors. While they wait for the police to stop what they call “terrorism” against their family, Bermea and his partner have become the focus of a campaign to at least get them a little vacation from the stress of the situation....more

Missing Before: What Happens When Your Teen Is Suffering from Acute Mental Illness

Once upon a time I believed that if I loved the stuffing out of my kids and worked only part time... or stopped working entirely... or worked from home... to better afford me the time and space to pack their lunches and do their laundry and tell them to put their stuff away and remind them that I love them beyond measure, the road might be a little bumpy, but it would be okay. I would be a good mother and they would be happy and healthy. That was a good idea. What we knew, the first time Chickadee got sick, was that she seemed unable to shake off a recent strep infection. ...more

My Ten Year-Old Grandson Rescues a Toddler from Drowning

My ten year-old grandson, Andrew-Jordan, who is ever vigilant of other children, often playing the role of Big Brother, and who is also very protective of his younger brother, Elijah, came to the rescue of a two-year old toddler yesterday. Had it not been for his always-on-alert watchful eye, and sensing that this little boy that’d just befriended him, who’d already taken a great liking to him—following him around like a shadow—that child could have drowned in the deep end of the pool....more
Wow. And Andrew-Jordan has one more fan in me. more
