I Yelled at a Stranger's Kid on Vacation

I've wanted to write about this for a while, but I've been sitting on it to decide whether or not I still felt justified in my actions, or if I was having a moment of poor judgment. Now that I'm a few weeks removed from the event, I'm going with the former. I yelled at a stranger's kid at the resort pool on vacation and I'm not sorry. I have two children of my own—and I use the term loosely because my "kids" are 13 and 16. Still, I understand that kids are free spirits, and vacation hysteria is a real thing. ...more

Save That Turkey Carcass and Your Leftover Turkey, and Turn It Into Turkey Soup!

In my family there's a long-standing joke about the turkey carcass. No one else wants it, but everyone is very aware of making sure it doesn't get thrown away because "You know Kalyn will want it." It's true! I think one of the best things about Thanksgiving is the delicious turkey soup you make later, from the leftover turkey carcass that would have been thrown away. ...more

Why I Won't Eat Nonorganic Potatoes

On my weekly shopping jaunt yesterday, I was irked to find the grocery store was out of organic baking potatoes. Frustrating. I was planning to have them for supper last night, and I already had the vegan chili beans for a topping. I thought about it for a minute—how could a vegetable that’s underground be sprayed directly with pesticides? The nonorganic potatoes must not be that bad, I thought. So I bought them instead. After I got home, I remembered an article my daughter had e-mailed me entitled, “The 7 foods experts won’t eat.” I pulled the article out of my file and…dang, sure enough, the fourth item on the list was “Nonorganic potatoes.”...more

Sonia Kashuk at Target, Beauty for Every Woman

In 1999 the Sonia Kashuk beauty brand was born in partnership with Target stores. At around the very same time, while wandering around Target one day, I found a perfect little eyeshadow brush and, because it was so pretty, I bought it. It was a Sonia Kashuk product, and it was the first eyeshadow brush I bought that didn't come free with an eyeshadow compact. I remember feeling very professional about having purchased it. Though I don't use it daily, I still have the eyeshadow brush - over 10 years later, and I am now well aware of the "luxury at mass" brand that is Sonia Kashuk....more
