Happy Father's Day, Dad. You're Worth 1/3 as Much as Mom.

One of the BlogHer Voices of the Year honorees, Hello Ladies, wrote, "Mothering isn’t the hardest job. Parenting is. And if we’re ever going to get past the gender gap in this country, we need to shift our thinking about mothering vs. parenting." And then Time covered a study discussing the quantified value of dads versus moms, with dads being worth approximately two-thirds less in today's dollars. Progress! Not!...more

When the Parenting Books Steer You Wrong

I knew so much about parenting and mothering -- before I had a small, totally dependent infant squawking at me day and night. I read all of the books. I knew what kind of parent I was going to be. And then life happened... or, my son happened. Apparently it's a somewhat universal experience. Michelle at The Momma Bird recently shared some regrets she has about following the parenting books so closely when her first was born. It touched that soft spot in my heart, and I hope she knows that we all have our own list of regrets. What are yours? ...more

Stone Soup Mondays: Your Favourite Blog Posts of the Week

The reality is that we all read these great posts during the week. We Stumble them, we Tweet about them, we even write a blog post in our own space responding to the ideas we read. I'd like to take a moment each week to gather up the best reads of the week -- from last Sunday to this Monday. In other words, this ongoing, weekly thread is a receptacle for all those great posts you read on the Internet and want others to read too. ...more

You Are Not the Center of the Universe. You're Welcome.

On Friday night, Sean and I took Rebecca to see the new Disney documentary African Cats. It was filmed on the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, one of the stops on our Kenyan adventure last summer. We thought it would be neat to be able to say, “We’ve been there!” Of course, we didn’t plan to say it during the movie -- that would be rude. Unfortunately, the mother and five-year-old boy behind us had no such misgivings about talking during the movie. And they talked and talked and talked through the entire thing....more

When Your Child is Invisible

It was the group with the older girls that caught my interest. I watched for a long time and couldn’t help but think that my child was deemed invisible out there. I watched a half dozen high school cheerleaders being playful and friendly with the adorable little girls and not even one interacted with my daughter. ...more

Why It's Good to Read Your Blog Offline

Whenever I print out posts, I always sit down and read through them before mailing. Why? Because reading a chunk of your old posts in a quiet setting, on paper, is a full-immersion exercise that gives you a clearer picture of your writing. Much more than just browsing a single post on a computer screen can. Because there is time and distance between me and something I wrote months ago, it almost feels like I’m reading someone else’s work. It’s fresh to me. I discover a lot from this process. ...more

True Confessions: I Am Afraid of Coffee Tables

It's true. I have a deep fear of coffee tables, and this very rational fear has sometimes caused problems in my relationships. I tried, for awhile, to ignore the fear of coffee tables and let one into my life but I couldn't do it. I had to kick it to the curb -- literally. ...more
