Deenie Lied, LIED. Scoliosis Isn't Scary Anymore

This post originally appeared on Chicago Parent's website where I am a contributor. At the beginning of summer break, we got some news. Our oldest daughter was diagnosed with Scoliosis. Our pediatrician had been monitoring her spine over the past two years during her yearly appointments.Well, when I say "monitoring", I mean while they have them do the bend over spine test, he notated that she has a possible crooked spine and that as she got older, we would have to keep an eye on it.It wasn't until the last checkup in April, that a different pediatrician, wanted to get an x-ray of her spine. Our beautiful 14 year old After the x-ray came back, the same pediatrician then told us her back was, and I quote, " as crooked as the old Lake Shore Drive".Those who have lived here a while will understand that reference. For those who haven't, it means my 14 year old has a spine that is crooked in two places. At the top and then again at the bottom. This is the thing, when you look at her?You won't notice.Which is probably why it slipped past us this whole time.It wasn't until she went in for her brace fitting, that I finally saw it.In the position that the gentleman who makes the brace had her, I saw it.Her shoulder blades aren't the same. And for some reason I wanted to cry, I don't know why....more

10 Reasons Why I Will Never Be Featured on Huffington Post

When I started this blog, I had no idea what Huffington Post was.Was it even in existence in 2010?See?This is why no one asks me for advice when it comes to blogging. This is what I have learned: apparently being featured on Huffington Post (HuffPo for short) is a good thing for your "numbers".Apparently "numbers" are good for your blog.Apparently your blog is supposed to "generate income".At least that's what I have heard.I wouldn't know anything about that. 1- I am not so good at making "10 Reasons" lists.I love me a list.I do.More than anything. It's why I write this way on the blog.Lists are fun, easy to read and get s#%$ done. But I am terrible at creating 10 REASONS YOU WILL NEVER GET A SPOTTED DOG.I am noticing a trend at Huffington Post.13 REASONS YOU WONT EVER FIND A MATE WITH THE FIRST NAME OF BETTY.Lists are HUGE.5 WAYS TO ENJOY CHOCOLATE AFTER HAVING A VASECTOMY....more

Eight Goodwill Projects. I Swear I Am Not Running Out Of Ideas.

When I read posts like this, I always think, "hmmmm someone has writers block".Because I am in a way, re-hashing old posts. But there are two reasons why I like to do posts like this: 1- because I feel like my Goodwill posts are worth a second look.DAMMIT I WORKED HARD ON THESE PROJECTS.I WANT PROPS. andb- I wanted to create a cool graphic on PicMonkey.OK.So it is a selfish motive, but its a motive nonetheless. I used to be so creative.People would come into my home weekly and be all "OMG that cabinet is so cool! ...more

Summer So Far 2014

"Summer" in our home usually starts around the time the kids get out of school.Never when the calendar says "Summer" officially starts.Kind of like how "Fall" doesn't officially start until the end of September but really feels like it starts the moment the girls step on the bus.The fun of "Summer" gets sucked up in bus fumes and school paperwork. Its just not any good without my children.I am one of "those" moms who looks forward to school break.Oh yes, there are times I get tired of my girls. But for me, I like the break from routine that school brings into our home. The schedules, the homework, the running around that end of August until beginning of June bring is exhausting. And I like having my girls with me.Like a mother bear, I like my tribe surrounding me.Our "Summer" has been going on here for going on two months now.It started out pretty good then went sour fast. Here is our "Summer" so far in pictures. ...more
