Francis is my Pope

Pope Francis is my pope. I am Episcopalian and have no thoughts of converting to Roman Catholicism. But I wish to claim Pope Francis as my pope. You have to like a pope who lives in a small apartment and rides in a Ford Focus. He is reforming the Vatican Curia and getting finances under control. He likes to ride in the open popemobile and hugs crippled children. He says, "who am I to judge" gay people who love God....more

Talk show interview on my book about sexual abuse

I was interviewed recently on an online talk show sponsored by Stop the Silence, an organization to help prevent childhood sexual abuse. The interview was about my book, Enfolded in Silence/A Story in Art of Healing from Sexual Trauma in Childhood ( I read poetry about my abuse experiences and also about how I healed, both of which are in my book. I continue to look for opportunities to spread the word about sexual abuse and healing. Healing is possible with good help and perseverance. It took time for me, but the life I lead now is very precious....more

Home from another semester in Africa

We are back from another semester teaching in a Tanzanian seminary in East Africa. No way to do blog posts from there. I taught Bible and American History, Life and Culture. Wonderful, eager students. I preached in villages and went to a village parish most Sundays. I loved it. The color, the drumming and dancing in worship, the people.  I encouraged twelve step recovery for a family member of an alcoholic. It is good to be one of a very few white people in an African culture. Changes the dynamic of race. Eternal summer. Africa rules!...more

Engaged people at book talk on sexual abuse in Chicago

My signing and talk about my book, Enfolded in Silence/A Story in Art of Healing from Sexual Trauma in Childhood, happened last weekend in Chicago. People who came were very responsive and asked good questions. They also shared their experiences. They said it was helpful. That is very redeeming for me. Reviewing Finding Me by Michele Knight

I just finished reading Michele Knight's book , Finding Me, about her survival from 11 years of rape and torture in captivity. Her voice is very direct and clear. She descibes her abuse but leaves some things private, which I applaud her for doing.  She lets us know some of how she struggled and survived. Her abuse was horrendous beyond imagining. She needed to tell her story and I am glad she did. Her determination to live was heroic. She has all my admiration and support. At first, I was concerned that she has apparently had no therapy work on her torment....more
