Tips to Help with Cyberbullies

I'm old enough that when I was in high school and middle school, there was no such thing as the internet. That's right, folks. I was bullied the good, old fashioned way: behind my back and face to face. Today's tween/teen landscape has changed dramatically and now, in addition to being ridiculed in person, kids are being bullied in a way that's harder to get away from: on the internet. When kids are bullied at school, they can go home to find peace. But the internet is everywhere, and saying "just shut the computer" or "just don't go online" isn't always realistic in today's teenage society. ...more

Homework Heartache

Frick is smart. So smart, in fact, that he is in two high school classes as an 8th grader. I'm a proud mother, most of the time. However, this past week, and the reason for my radio silence, has been very difficult. With that degree of smartness, comes a great deal of trust on my part--trust that when he says, "I did it at school" or "I don't have any homework," he's generally telling the truth. Last semester, his grades went down to a C- in those classes and when we found out about it, we helped him bring his grades back up. ...more

Why I Blog as *Bleep*

I have a legit reason for blogging as *bleep*. To make a very long story short, my hubby is in the military. The hubby is fairly important in the grand scheme of things. As The Important Dude’s wife, I tend to have military wifely responsibilities that inhibit me from saying everything I want to say. I also work for the Department of Defense. Again, not the most open forum for running your mouth. ...more

Thursday Top Ten

1. The Bike Protection Fairy. OH MY GOD, I can’t believe Frick’s bike was still at school after leaving it for the weekend. 2.#SITS31DBBB. Dude, we all know I need all the help I can get. Thank you for supporting my shenanigans. 3. Last games of the basketball season. I got super excited about not having to attend any kid sporting events for a month and then remembered that Frack is in a winter lacrosse league that starts on Saturday. FML ...more

Mom Moment Monday

Last night, after a day of site seeing in the city, the hubby comes in from the garage, “Frick…where is your bike?” *crickets* Frick “Oh, yeahhhhhh. I left it at school.” Calmly…in my head ARE YOU FRICKIN’ KIDDING ME??? IT’S MONDAY AND YOU JUST NOW REMEMBER?! But, being the good wife I am, I let the hubby field that one. ...more

Fat Jeans

It’s official. I’ve reached the I-can’t-be-fat-anymore point. It’s all relative. My fat is someone else’s skinny, I’m sure. But when my FAT jeans are like sausage casings holding in the flab, it’s time to cut off the feed bag. Seriously. Fast food is not my friend. Neither is semi-fast food. What happened to my great body and the desire to work out? I’ll tell you. It’s staring at me from the bottom of an empty container of KFC mashed potatoes. They’re like crack, only better....more

It's Lonely On The New Blog

So, for you new readers, this is a new blog. I had another blog for say…3 years? I had a small, faithful following, but my name was all over it. In an effort to add a little space in my personal life, I’ve opted to be a little more “private” here when it comes to names and what I talk about. Why? Because, if I’ve had a shit day a work and want to be snarky about it, I can. If my real life friends are pushing my annoyance button, I want to be able to talk about it!...more

Mom Moment Monday

Last night, while watching tv in bed, I hear crying from the other room. This isn’t the whimpery, I-feel-sorta-sick-to-my-stomach kind of crying. This was the I-just-watched-my-dog-get-hit-by-a-bus kind of crying. But, with years of experience, I’ve also learned this is the sound Frack makes when he wakes in terror from war nightmares about his dad. You don’t know what it’s like to have your child wake so scared and so shaken that he won’t talk about it. All he could muster was, “I had a dream that Dad was in Iraq!” I asked him if he wanted dad to hold him. “No!...more

Bedtime Motivational Tactics for Good Grades

A few weeks back, the husband and I resorted to some new tactics in the battle over grades with our middle schoolers. Here's what we came up with:...more
