Chili Mac and Cheese

I really don’t know what to call this.  It’s not quite a soup, isn’t really a chili, not exactly a stew.  What I do know is, it’s really tasty and a great way to warm up on a crazy windy day like today.  (I sent my dog outside a little while ago, and I was unsure if I’d get him back.  It’s that windy.)...more

Send Off Tomato Season With a Bang: Heirloom Tomato and Cheese Tart

This summer was a summer of firsts for our family.  We’d moved to a new place, so every day seemed like an adventure for a while, as we navigated our way through our new town.  One of the things I was incredibly excited to find on our exploration was our amazing local farmers market.  Actually, Indianapolis is lucky to be home to many amazing markets, but we frequented the Carmel Farmers Market, because it was close to home. What a great way to spend a Saturday morning!  We love to grab a delicious, savory breakfast crepe (Avery prefers Nutella and Banana) or a “Walking Waffle”, and wander around the beautiful vendors' booths, filling our bag with fresh baked pastries and breads, amazing produce, and so much more. You can guarantee that one of the items that made it into our bag weekly were beautiful homegrown tomatoes.  As you know, I can’t grow a thing, so I love when someone else can provide me with amazing summer tomatoes. ...more

Summer in a Sandwich: Grilled Mozzarella and Spinach BLTs

This, my friends, is a really good sandwich.I’m a sucker for a good BLT, and summertime is the perfect time to make them.  It’s such a simple sandwich, but there may be nothing finer than a BLT on a warm, summer day, made with fresh tomatoes from the garden.  (In our case, the tomatoes always come from someone else’s garden because I have a bit of a brown thumb.)...more

Silly Name, Tasty Cake: Delumpkin Pumpkin Cake

I’ll admit it. I’m not ashamed. I first made this recipe because I thought the name was cute.  I have no idea what a Delumpkin is, or a Delumpkin Pumpkin, but whatever it is…it totally works.  This cake is amazingly moist and flavorful, plus it’s incredibly easy to throw together.  If you’re looking for a holiday alternative to pumpkin pie or a spice cake, this fits the bill, and it’s a hit every time I’ve made it for a crowd!...more

Perfectly Perfect Fall Soup: Roasted Cauliflower Soup with Aged Cheddar and Bacon

I have a lot of friends who think it’s pretty funny that I’ve held down more odd jobs than I can count. You name it, and I probably dabbled in it at one point in my life. When I was in high school, I worked in a local bakery. Besides the amazing cakes, breads, pastries and desserts we whipped up, we had a pretty mean lunch menu. That bakery was where I was first introduced to cauliflower soup. Up until that point in my life, cauliflower was just…cauliflower. Nothing spectacular. It was usually the last to go on a veggie tray and we had it with dinner a lot, but it was just cauliflower....more

Bringing Soup Into Summer: Southwestern Gazpacho

I love, love, LOVE a bowl of icy, cool Gazpacho in the summer.  When it’s miserably hot out, there’s nothing finer.  I hadn’t made Gazpacho in ages, though, but after having a delicious bowl of a Southwestern inspired Gazpacho on a recent trip to Michigan, I’d been craving another bowl.  I didn’t get up the nerve to ask for the recipe when I was at the restaurant, so I decided to play around with a regular Gazpacho recipe.  The result was fantastic.  In fact, my husband told me it’s the best Gazpacho I’ve ever made....more

Kid Friendly and Fabulous! Tangy Watermelon Rice Krispie Treats

When my kids are home in the summer time, and it’s a kazillion degrees outside, we spend a good deal of time in the kitchen making “fun food”.  Generally, there’s not a whole lot of nutritional value in “fun food”, but that’s OK.  It’s for fun, right?  This is a recipe that I came across online last year and it has become a summer favorite.  Last summer, I should have bought stock in marshmallows, I made so many batches! The finished product is deliciously chewy, sweet, and tangy, but above all, fun!  Plus, from an adult standpoint, it’s pretty darn cute....more
I love this! I might have to try this at our next BBQ :)more

The Perfect Summer Dessert: French Almond Cake with Berries and Cream

Right now, the farmers markets and roadside stands are brushing off their winter dust and settling in to offer us the best of the summer produce.  I love all of the beautiful fruits and veggies that summer has to offer, and one of the best parts of summer, for me, is when berry season is in full effect.  We haven’t made our annual trip to the strawberry patch yet, but when we do, I’ll be up to my ears in amazingly sweet, delicious berries.  I can’t wait!...more

May is National Asparagus Month! Who Knew? - Asparagus and Gruyere Tart

I’m sure you’ve been just dying to know what I did with more of that gigantic bag of asparagus, ever since I wrote about it on my blog last week.  No?  Well…hmmm.  I guess that’s just too bad, because I have a great recipe to share with you today because of that giant bag of asparagus! You may not have known this, but May is actually National Asparagus Month! There’s no better time to inundate the blog with asparagus filled recipes then, right?...more

Less Guilt on Cinco de Mayo: Crispy, Oven-Baked Chimichangas

Saturday is Cinco de Mayo, so I figured (like every other food blogger on the planet this week) that I’d throw a Mexican inspired meal your way.  I love Mexican food and, thankfully, my family does as well, so we are frequent patrons at the Mexican restaurants around town.  Every time we try a new Mexican place, my husband orders a chimichanga.  He feels that if they can make a chimi that he enjoys, it’s worth stopping in to visit them again.  I love a good chimi myself, but my waistline does not.  They are delicious for a reason…chicken or beef, stuffed with cheese...more
