The Fear of Losing Her

NaBloPoMo's writing prompt for today asks what my biggest fear as a child was. It was the same overwhelming fear I had as a child, a teenager, a college-aged young adult, and as a full-grown woman. My greatest fear was losing my mother. I was forced to face that fear on October 24, 2015, at 3:17 A.M. ...more

Following In Her Footsteps

As a child, I didn't know what a SAHM was. All I knew that my mom saw me off to school every morning and was at home every evening when I got off the school bus. I knew that I had a nice, hot breakfast every day before I left and a huge supper every evening. She was there to help me with my homework, as was my daddy. He worked at the local saw mill and was always gone before I left for school, but was always home by the time I made it home. ...more

Truths of the Heart

All my life, I've "felt" things. I've never spoken (or in this case, written) these words out loud except to two people, but on the day I got married, my intuition was screaming that I shouldn't go through with it. I got married at 2 PM on October 23, 1993, and I left the house at 10 AM to get pantyhose. I took one of the backroads to the store and on the way back, something inside said, "Keep going!" You see scratches, burns, abrasions, broken teeth, etc....more

"All You Had to Do Was Ask, Tre"

Even before gas prices rose above $3 a gallon, filling up an SUV was expensive. It would have been expensive for me regardless of the price because I had very little money to work with in the first place. As his wife, I was on an allowance.Let's Add Gaslighting to the Equation...more

Spitting Fire and Other Forms of Relationship Abuse

I Guess He Told Me!Received 12.3.14 at 12:22 PM: "My $200k will be for me and whom ever I get with!"Received 12.3.14 at 12:23 PM: "You got your punishment because I divorced you and I only have nine more month of alimony and then I am done giving you money! Hallelujah!"I didn't reply to either of these. I wouldn't take his phone calls....more

Readin' and Writin'

I will never forget that day in 4th grade at Sarepta Elementary School. I was one of three Black students in the class and had been called on to read. The word that I misread was "come". I saw it as "cone". When my teacher, Margaret Clark, corrected me, I told her that I had said "cone" instead of "come" because I thought the "m" was an "n". She paid me no mind. She did, however, announce to the class that sometimes "they can't pronounce letters clearly". I was eight....more
