The Greatest Gifts for Grandchildren

My grandson, Johnny Mac Pippin, is 2 1/2 years old now and he still lives very far away. Sigh. My strategy for Christmas gifts for him hasn't changed all that much since I wrote my first Ten Great Gifts for a Grandchild's First Christmas post two years. ago. I'm still working on that darn stocking and I still buy so many gifts that my daughter doesn't know what to do with all of the toys and things that I send. Yes, I'm that kind of grandmother. I can't help it. It's fun! Here are some of my favorite gift ideas for this year....more

The Best Coloring Books for Grown-Ups

I remember when I was about 10 or so and I received a very grown-up coloring book and a brand new set of colored pencils. I was thrilled by both as coloring pencils were not something I had very often and the coloring book was extra cool because it only had an image on one side. To me, that was a sign of a grown-up coloring book and it was awesome. If you have a similar memory from your childhood, then this post is for you. Or, if you still love the smell of a brand new box of 64 Crayola Crayons. Or, if you love nothing better than a gorgeous box of brand new colored pencils or markers....more

Yes Virginia, I Am Christmas Shopping In July

I don't generally plan to start my Christmas shopping in July but every year, it seems to work out that way. Too many really cool things cross my path or I've saved a half dozen links and they all start to pile up in Evernote and that leads me to just go ahead and BUY now rather than waiting until the last minute. This actually works out really well since I can get a big batch of shopping done and my wallet (or gasp, credit cards) don't groan quite as much under the weight of all of the purchases in November and December. Take a look at some of the things I've bought (or plan to buy) this month: ...more

Go Beyond Sweet Cherry Pie with 10 Amazing Cherry Recipes

I love cherries. Sweet cherries, sour cherries, cherry pie filing out of a can, maraschino cherries, dried cherries -- you name it, I love it. I even love Warrant's Cherry Pie (you're welcome.) When cherry season rolls around, I'm one heck of a happy woman. I buy bag after bag and then... I just eat them straight out of the bag. I always think that I should make something with the cherries but I don't. Not because we don't have a cherry pitter. ...more
