What does it all mean?

Last night I dreamed I was on the set of a reality TV show.I found myself in our overfilled living room swollen to the bursting point with production staff and hangers on, when my oldest daughter (who was the star of this show) decided it was time—on national television—to inform me that she was critically worried about the length of my stick-straight arm hair. The entire room gasped. “It’s just so long,” she continued. “I’m really worried about you, Trace.”...more

I still love my husband

We go on a date every week to reestablish our connection to each other. This is necessary both for our sanity and my whininess. I am still giddy about my husband and being in his presence, despite the fact that we are, you know, MARRIED. ...more

Me: Au naturel

I ran into an old acquaintance the other day at the grocery store. We made idle chit chat until we reached the passably polite point, and then, just as I turned and we made our goodbyes, she lobbed a conversational egg at my head and blurted: “What did you do to your hair?”...more

The gritty underbelly of motherhood

At the ripe old age of 40, I have come to understand that one must find the good in situations whenever one can.Case in point: A mom moment. First the grumbling, then the whining. And then…her sleepy eyes widened as her cheeks puffed out a-la-Louis Armstrong. I reacted instinctively, cupping my hands bowl-like at the base of her chin. Less than a second later my hands were filled with the all-too recent contents of my 6-year-old daughter’s stomach....more

Bank of America: Ethics? We don’t need no stinking ethics.

I am not a mathematician. I am not an accountant. It is not easy for me to manage my finances, but I try very, very hard. And because of this challenge, I take great pride in being able to maintain my accounts and pay bills on time. (*knocks on wood*) Occasionally I make mistakes. And the bank is always quick to penalize me for them. And today, I admit my mistake. And the bank was quick to penalize me. And keep on penalizing me. ...more

Exactly like that... except without that Alice

After much discussion, planning, fretting, processing, excitement and outright zeal, my boyfriend and I decided to take the plunge: no marriage. Not yet. Not sure where that stands on my horizon, or even if it is on my horizon. I do know I have a horizon, and that is a start. No. The intense deliberations and planning surrounded our decision to co-habitate. Live in sin, if you will. ...more

DELICIOUS: Read me now, believe me later

I have never made curry; I had it one time, at this one place, a long time ago, but I remembered the general flavor. The tang, followed by the zip, followed by the OM NOM NOM NOM. Suffice it to say, Sunday afternoon, I had a hankering for curry. For those not in the know, ...more

New Year's Top Ten

I've been thinking a lot about my New Year's Resolution this year. Like most of the rest of the planet, annually I vow to change some aspect of my life for the better. One year it was complaining. I wanted to reduce how much I bitched about everything. Clearly you can all tell how well THAT one went. Some years involved exercising-- dedication to starting-- or dieting-- or giving up swear (feck that)-- or generally trying to be a better person. That last one worked out well for me, because "better" is entirely subjective. ...more
