Normality Defined ~ Momma's Heart Hero

During the cooler months of the year my son appears “normal.”  Society sees a typical high school student, a 16-year-old wearing Vans and carrying a string sack loaded down with electronics, power cords, chewing gum, and various other (evidently) necessary items to survive a day in high school.Matthew plays alto sax in the high school marching band, played JV lacrosse this spring, and is socially active – ‘normal’ by society’s standards....more

ANA Food Allergies: Halloween Could Kill My Child

This morning I am mad. Really mad. I am mad because I am hurt. You see, my son is a high school sophomore. He is an active member of his school. He has spoken at local Board of Supervisor and Board of Education meetings regarding issues near to his heart. He plays in the marching band (he's the best one out there if you ask me or his dad!) He swims on a summer swim team. He volunteers at a local middle school band camp during the summer. He volunteered out of state at a food allergy camp last summer, giving up a week of his personal time to show these children a great, safe time!...more

Hormonal Heat Wave

I am too young for this.  Period.  Not exclamation. Period.  A statement.  A fact.  I’m only 41 (okay, nearing 42.) For the most part I feel 31 (okay, 21.) Why doesn’t my body agree? Who the hell set my internal temperature 20 degrees higher than the rest of the world?...more

The Kids Did It - The tree that is

It is time to decorate the Christmas tree!My enthusiasm is not contagious no matter how hard I try.  Every year I feel deflated, upset, and neglected.  Pulling out the tree, locating the decorations, and carrying dozens of boxes, my husband helps (he even sings!)  The boys, however, dread my bubbly excitement for this tradition almost as much as they avoid hearing me exclaim that A Charlie Brown Christmas is on television in 5 minutes!...more

Today I woke up...

Today I woke up.  Today I woke up sad.  Today I woke up.Sad, according to Merriam-Webster, means " affected with or expressive of grief or unhappiness."  Unhappy.  Hmmm.  Perhaps that could describe the lack of joy I feel today?  No, I am not unhappy but rather not happy....more

Embracing thirty-nine?

I will turn thirty-nine on Saturday. Seriously?  Thirty-nine? Yes, I do realize that thirty-nine does not need spelled out.  For some reason, seeing the 3 and the 9 side-by-side causes me stress...for some reason.  If it is all the same to you, I will just spell it out - thirty-nine. Not sure why the "9" birthdays bother me so much.  The "0" birthdays are fine.  What really freaks me out?  The "5" birthdays!...more

Flat Butt Syndrome (FBS) and how it affects traveling

Journey to the Sandbox: My Soldier, Kevlar and Deployment

He left as a unit of one. No big send off, no banners, no parade. No family members to take pictures of us. No publicity. He just left. We cherished every sweet moment of privacy. Friends could not understand us turning into hermits. What were we thinking? Did we not want the big send off or news coverage? Certainly, those, now traditional, social events would make us feel better and would bring his leaving to reality. No amount of conversation helped them understand; we had everything we needed right there amongst the green and tan sea of items that had taken over our home. We had us. ...more
