Preparing for parenthood with our little kitten

It's really amazing how much our little kitten has taken over our lives since we got her on Dec. 28, and I really think it's preparing my husband and I for parenthood, should God bless us with kids in the future....more

Early V-Day planning: My thoughts on Valentines gifts for husbands

We're just into January and Christmas gift shopping is but a recent memory, but I'm already starting to think of Valentine's (and believe it or not, I'm also planning my husband's 30th birthday present for July) – I guess I'm a bit of an eager beaver when it comes to gifts!...more

In with the old? My modified, rehashed New Year's resolutions

I think the whole "out with the old, in with the new" saying is kind of misleading. I mean, yes, we are looking for a fresh start, new beginnings, getting rid of old habits from the previous year, and yada yada yada. But how many of us actually start something completely fresh in the new year that hasn't been attempted before? I think many people would agree that the most popular New Year's resolutions tend to be the ones that keep getting rehashed over and over again - get fit, spend less, etc....more

'What superpower would you choose?' 'The ability to not feel tired all the time.'

My church's young adults' small group has a tradition of asking a silly icebreaker question, like "How do you eat your carrots?" or "What genre would your life's movie be?" But sometimes, they do yield some poignant answers. Case in point: last week we asked what superpower each of us would want, and after the usual teleportation/flying/super-strength answers, one woman answered, "I'd like to not be tired all the time."...more

Top 10 list of stuff to do outdoors this winter (plus how to stay warm)

My husband will tell you that I'm not the most active of folks, mostly because I'm pretty lazy and demotivated. But once I get out there, especially in the winter, I LOVE being outside running, hiking, cross-country skiing, or whatever. In fact, the best times I've had training for running races were in the winter, because I'm actually one of those people who wilts in hot weather and would take running in subzero temperatures anytime over running in the blazing heat....more

Rolling in the (cookie) dough

Normally, I love baking cookies. My husband doesn't really understand why I enjoy spending hours mixing, prepping and generally making a mess in the kitchen that I will eventually need to clean up, but when the result is well-received and tastes good, I'm usually a happy bunny and would say it's all worth it....more

The one meal I CAN cook quickly

Lately I've been exhausted. It's a combination of a long commute to work, not sleeping enough, not drinking enough water (an aside: one of my New Year's resolutions is going to be to drink more water.), and just having to rush around like a crazy person trying to fix up the house whenever I have a spare moment. Oh, and not exercising, and also, it's winter. So understandably, cooking has been a bit of a chore lately, combined with the previously mentioned fact that I'm super slow....more

Loving gift cards as I get older

I'll admit I may have misjudged the awesomeness of gift cards when I was younger, and I'm guessing there are probably a couple of bloggers out there who might still feel the same way. "They're uncreative," I would sigh, as I fretted about what the heck to get someone for Christmas....more

Speeding up the slowpoke cook?

I don't know why, but for some reason, even easy recipes take me ages to prepare. I never know where the time goes and my husband's always bewildered as to why it takes me an hour and a half to prepare chicken cacciatore and stirfried veggies. (That's not a criticism of my husband just sitting back while I prepare dinner, as when he cooks he can do way more elaborate meals in way less time) I wonder if it's because I'm really disorganized? But it really makes no sense when it's something as simple as chicken cacciatore....more
