I BRAKE FOR CRITTERS

Naturally, we all brake for cute, cuddly cats and dogs crossing the road, but do you brake for other creatures? I do! (sometimes to the annoyance of drivers behind me.) What do they expect me to do? Run over wildlife? Geez....more

THE NIGHT I FOILED AN ATTACKER

Picture this. It's late at night in a major metropolitan hospital at the close of visiting hours. I've been to visit a sick friend on the ninth floor and the wing is nearly empty--the hospital is undergoing renovations. As I walk down the long hallway to the elevator, I suddenly feel like a heroine in a Kevin Williamson movie. The hallway is dark, deserted, and the only sound is my footsteps on the linoleum floor. Most of the rooms are empty and hospital equipment is stacked in the hall, covered with plastic sheets....more

SHOULD YOU FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS? MAYBE NOT.

< Follow your dream!! Reach for the stars! Only you can make it happen! If you can imagine it, you can achieve it! Sound familiar? This is the kind of thing you see all the time in "feel-good" advice columns; advice that sadly is not based in reality. When I won an award and $6,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for one of my teen novels, I had the opportunity to speak to middle schools and high schools in the northeast. Many were inner-city schools and the students faced numerous challenges, both at home and in the classroom....more

IS YOUR CAT A NARCISSIST? PROBABLY

As many of you know, I'm a psychologist in private practice on the East coast and recently I came across a wonderful article on narcissism. As I read through the description, I thought, "Good heavens!! How did I miss this? My cat is a narcissist." (Actually several of my 8 cats are narcissists, according to the traits listed in the magazine). Let's take a quick look, and keep your own cat in mind as we go through some of the characteristics. Do any of them strike a chord with you?...more

THE MAIN THING IS TO KEEP THE MAIN THING THE MAIN THING

I was so struck by this quote from Stephen Covey, I decided to write a blog about it. The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. What if it were possible to do this, every single day? Think of all the obstacles you could eliminate. No more procrastination, no more second guessing yourself, no more false starts, no more wasted time. You wouldn't be at loose ends when you start your day because you would have a blueprint right in front of you. It would be simple. No more dithering about, wondering what to do. You would just do THE MAIN THING....more

BAD LUCK, GOOD LUCK, ARE YOU SUPERSTITIOUS?

Yesterday was Friday the 13th. (Yes, I know I'm a "day late and a dollar short," but this is such a fun blog topic, I just couldn't resist.) If you're reading this, I assume you survived Friday the 13th with no mishaps. So...no black cats crossed your path, you didn't open an umbrella in the house and you didn't walk under a ladder....more

VOLUNTEERING IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL

Volunteering is one of those activities that pays back big dividends. When  you serve up a hot meal at a soup kitchen, bake a cake to raise money for your child's school, or process adoption papers at the local SPCA, you  help yourself. Did you know that people who volunteer--whether it's through a church group, a civic association or a favorite charity--are happier, healthier, and have lower rates of depression than people who don't volunteer?...more

Have You Already Ditched Your New Year's Resolutions? Don't Worry.

Did you know that most New Year's resolutions bite the dust by mid-February? If your shiny new vows have already become tarnished, don't despair. I have a better method. Instead of making "resolutions," choose six "habits" that you'd like to incorporate into your life. Six sounds like a lot but the beauty of this plan is that you don't have to tackle all six at once. They are sequential. You add one each week until you have accumulated (and hopefully mastered) all six. ...more
