Rites of Passage

It’s funny, the things you remember about adolescence. When I was in fifth or sixth grade we learned about the process of menstruation via educational video in health class. Other kids giggled and squirmed. I fell off my desk, passed out cold....more

5 Ways to Beat the Winter Blahs

It's getting to that point in the winter where it's hard to remember a time when Toronto didn't seem to be auditioning for the part of Narnia under the rule of scary Tilda Swinton. I can see my friends and myself getting a bit batty about the unrelenting winter. So what can we do when we can't afford to catch a jet to Australia? I've got a few ideas. ...more

8 Ways to Make Your Bathroom Eco-Friendly

Lately I’ve been on a mission to become a more environmentally responsible citizen. I really feel that humans’ impact on the planet is one of (if not the most) important issues of our time. For those of us who don’t yet feel drastically inconvenienced (or horribly threatened) by the effects of climate change, it is all too easy to push some frightening realities about what will happen if we don’t change our collective behaviour to the back of our minds....more

The Art of Talking Politics

Last weekend my mom and I popped by the AGO to check out the (awesome) Alex Colville exhibit. While we were there, we wandered into the art and politics wing of the gallery, a place where my mom could pretty much be an installation, as it was the intersection of two of her greatest passions. ...more

PCOS and Weight: How to Get Your Groove Back

When I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) earlier this year, the doctors game me all kinds of helpful (and alarming!) information about the condition.  What they didn’t tell me was that their diagnosis would trigger my long-dormant obsession with the bathroom scale, send me into a calorie-counting frenzy and give my self esteem a serious pummeling. ...more

Is Julien Blanc, the "Pickup Artist" who Advocates "#chokinggirlsaroundtheworld" Coming to Your City?

Trigger warning: discussion of sexual assault and violence against womenFor just over a week, Toronto has been abuzz over allegations that Jian Ghomeshi, a much beloved CBC radio host who claimed to espouse feminist values, was fired by the station over allegations he had abused and sexually assaulted a number of women, which rose from 3 to 10 as the week went on....more

How I Learned to Love My Menstrual Cup

As some of you may recall, I'm doing some work with Mother Nature Partnership, a fabulous organization providing women in rural Cameroon with reproductive health education and hygienic, reusable menstrual cups to replace the dangerous, unhygienic, and just all-around uncomfortable and inconvenient methods of managing their periods. Obviously I think this project is brilliant and am a big fan of menstrual cups because there are fewer chemicals in the body and fewer tampons in the landfill. At least, I was a big fan of them in theory. Despite talking them up all over the Internet and to anyone who didn't look ready to keel over from squeamishness in person for the past couple of months, I had yet to actually use one myself. ...more

The Trouble with Trolls

I’ve been thinking about trolls lately. No, sadly, not the fluffy, neon-haired bejewelled belly button type (what a weird fad that was).I’ve been thinking more about the type who prowl the internet looking for unmoderated forums to spew bilious, hateful trash. You know, the ones you encounter when, against your better judgement you think, “I’ll just quickly scroll down to the comment section of this thoughtful piece of writing or this heartfelt video.”...more

How a Blood Clot Changed My Body Confidence

Of course, it hasn’t stopped me from scrutinizing my body with a less than kind eye now and again, but that shift in focus has been a really powerful thing. So my advice to women when they find themselves dissatisfied with their looks is to try your damndest to shift your perspective. Think about the amazing things your body can do besides fit into your skinny jeans. Think about the way it feels, and what you can do to make it feel better. ...more
