The Business of Happiness

There are quite a few things I love to do. I love to watch movies with my family. I love to take pictures. I love to go for walks outside, have dinner parties with friends, and stroll through museums with my kids. I have no dreams about getting paid to do those things that I love. But that seems to be the battle cry, isn’t it? If you want to be happy, you’re supposed to get paid to do what you love. If you’re doing work you love, Confucius says you’ll never work a day in your life. So quit your mindless cubicle job and start your own business already....more

Why Im Going to BlogHer Pro

At 5:30 tomorrow morning, instead of snuggling a little closer to my husband in bed, I’ll be shoving my red carry-on luggage into the overhead bin of an airplane headed for San Francisco. Despite the early flight time, I’m excited about the trip – and not just because San Francisco is one of my favorite places in America. I’m leaving my bed and my family behind for business: I’m attending BlogHer PRO, a “multi-track conference for professionally-minded bloggers looking to take their business, marketing, and technical skills to the next level....more

Why (and How) Our Family is Taking a Year Off

When you tell people that you are voluntarily moving into a 24 foot travel trailer with your husband and two kids, you get to enjoy a variety of reactions. Confusion, excitement, doubt. Envy and encouragement. I've seen a broad spectrum of responses play across different faces over the last 8 months since I began telling people that I was planning to sell the bulk of my stuff and move my family into an RV so that we could travel around America for a year....more

First of all let me commend you on such a courageous decision. I applaud your family for taking ...more

On Getting Rid Of My Shoes To Make Room For Bigger Dreams

Yesterday afternoon I had five shoe racks in my closet, which still wasn’t enough storage space to prevent having to line my boots up along the wall. By the end of the night, I had whittled my collection down to one hanging rack. I’ll be honest and admit that I walked around my bathroom in a few pairs before I packed them away. I turned several over in my hands repeatedly, remembering where I’d bought them and worn them and how special they’d made me feel. ...more

'I want all of those things even more than I want shoes.'

Own Your Beauty: On Faces and Eyes, Especially Mine

It was odd for me to email her. Although we’ve met once and I’ve written about her, Karen and I aren’t close friends. Certainly not the kind of friends that email each other on the way home from therapy. And yet, as I drove down the Interstate last Wednesday morning with the sticky residue of tears on my cheeks, I knew I had to email her. I had to get answers, and my gut was certain that she was the place to start. I got home and logged onto my email before I lost my nerve; I knew it was presumptuous to drag this casual acquaintance into my darkest place, my Original Hurt, if you will. ...more

The Key To Preventing Rape: Our Sons

Do you ever notice that when you talk about rape or abuse or sexual assault, people come out in droves to tell you that they’ve been through something similar? And no one is surprised. And why should they be? We’ve all heard the statistics. 1 in 6 women (and 1 in 33 men) will be sexually assaulted. 60% are not reported to the police. Every 2 minutes, someone in the US is sexually assaulted. Approximately 73% of rape victims know their assailants. ...more

Am I Too Shallow For BlogHer?

I am a woman. And I blog. Surely that means that I should fit in perfectly at BlogHer. Right? If ever there was a niche for me to nestle into, this would certainly be it. Except... I find myself wondering if maybe I'm not deep enough for the women of BlogHer. Every day I come here, looking for ways to contribute and new ideas. I scan the front page and the headlines - mainly because that's the only thing I've figured out how to do just yet. And within about 90 seconds I find myself very... overwhelmed. ...more

What's Wrong With The Pro Life Movement

Who doesn’t love a post about Abortion? First, some background information (ie, where the hell this is coming from). I read a post a while back about a blogger who had an abortion. This was a decision she’d made a long, long time ago and she has since become a wife, mother, etc. etc. etc. She decided to post about it because of a post that she had read. She came out and said “I had an abortion, this was why, and this is how I feel about it”. ...more
