Do you know how to spend your tax refund?

It's tax season, that time of year to figure out exactly how much of your hard-earned money never makes it to your pocket. If you are lucky, however, you get some of that money back. I know, I know. You aren't technically supposed to get a refund. A refund means that you have allowed too many taxes to be taken out of your check during the year, and you could have been putting that money away in an interest earning account every month or pay down debt. That's what all the tax-related articles tell you....more

Do you have a runaway grocery bill?

As a personal budget consultant (shameless plug), I was thoroughly shocked the other day in a conversation about groceries. There are five people in my family, and we pay $1000-1400 a month for food, diapers, toiletries, etc.Bananas, right?I couldn't believe the other women in the conversation were paying between $400-700 per month for their families, as larger or larger than mine. I forgot what it was like to use coupons, shop sales, and stock up on items. I was jealous!...more

Why You're Broke, and Why it's Not Your Fault

Maybe you aren't broke. Maybe you are very narrowly making your bills every month, or maybe you can pay your bills just fine, and have money to spare. Your kids aren't special...and you aren't either.

I have a new hero, and his name is David McCullough, Jr. an English teacher from an affluent Massachusetts town. He gave the commencement speech to the graduating class, and he debunked a belief that helicopter parents have mistakenly believed for the past twenty years. He told them they aren't special. ...more

Hug your babies and support Avery!

I wanted to share this story, because I thought it would be all over the place and it doesn't seem to be just yet. Baby Avery has SMA; it is a fatal genetic disease, and she will be considered extremely lucky to live to be two years old. SMA is Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and while they have just recently (over the last few years) been able to test for this gene, it is not automatically given as part of prenatal genetic testing. Avery's parents had never heard of SMA until Avery was four months old. They were never offered testing....more

The best freakin advice I've given so far...

I can't wait until my girls are teenagers, and for once I'm not being sarcastic.

I don't normally watch the news; it's totally depressing, and it cuts into whatever current season of The Real Housewives is airing. This morning, I decided to be adventurous and check out The Today Show, to see if Matt Lauer is still cute or losing his edge. I was distracted by a news story that depicted a mother who saw some things on Facebook that her 13 year old daughter was saying, and didn't approve....more
