Cutting Kids' Hair At Home: 7 Tips for a Successful Style

When I was little, my parents used to lay out old newspapers on the patio, sit us down in a chair and snip snip at our hair till we came out, more often than not, halfway presentable. Contrary to popular lore, it wasn't a particularly traumatizing experience. My brothers always had cute little boy haircuts and I, at most, had a little hair trimmed off my scraggly ends. I don't think my parents ever even considered paying somebody to cut our hair....more

My husband started cutting the boys' hair last year and we never went back to the salon. Well, I ...more

Would You Buy Designer Clothes?

I was recently at a party where a woman noticed my purse, a messenger bag from Target's recent Liberty of London collection (she guessed it was Anthropologie), and we got to talking about the new designer collaborations at Target and other big box stores and affordable fashion in general. "Even if I had the money," she declared, "I wouldn't spend it on designer clothes." Why throw money at expensive designer clothes, she asked, when fashionable clothing can be had for so much less at places like H&M and Zara and even Target? ...more

The Pixie Cut: Why I Went Short (Would You?)

A few weeks ago I went to a salon, pulled my hair back in a ponytail and asked the hairdresser to cut it off. What she placed in my hand was 15 inches of my hair tied neatly in a yellow hairband. That hair is on its way to Locks of Love, an organization that provides hairpieces to economically disadvantaged children suffering from long term medical hair loss. A friend of mine grows her hair out the requisite 12 inches every couple of years and then cuts it off to donate, and I've always admired her for it....more

Jean Paul Gaultier for Target Collection Disappointing

Like most of Target's designer collections, Jean Paul Gaultier's collection for Target is expected to fly off the shelves. This may be true, but I'll tell you this: the pieces will not be flying into my closet. Even though there were quite a few pieces that looked promising in pictures, I was really disappointed with the quality of the entire collection. The pieces I thought I would like still looked decent on the hanger, but once I placed the fabric between my fingers it was over....more

Vintage-Inspired Hair Accessories

Don't you ever feel a little jealous of the fancy British women that get to wear fancy little hats to equestrian events and such? Is it just me? Okay, maybe I don't want to wear a two-foot-high fascinator, but I think that a little bit of hair bling doesn't hurt anybody. Michelle Obama nearly single-handedly brought back the brooch with her vintage and vintage-inspired statement pins, but I confess I'm still not apt to wear a big brooch on my sweater. But in my hair? That's a trend I can get behind. ...more

Personal Style Starts with Confidence (and a Great Red Lipstick)

Confidence has always been an elusive thing for me. I try to project it, but it is more a fabrication than a true reflection of my state of mind. In all things, I care too much what other people think of me. The smallest of criticisms is often enough to send me reeling for days. I aim to please, even as I try not to. It's a constant battle between the self-assuredness I wish I had and the occasionally crippling insecurity that grips me....more

Holiday Style on a Budget

I used to use the holidays as an excuse to splurge on myself and my loved ones, but since having kids I've become that tired old cliche of a mom. I take joy in picking out the perfect presents for my kids, my husband, our extended family, our friends, but I can't bring myself to splurge on myself. Not even a little bit. I make my husband promise not to buy me anything. I return gifts given to me and buy clothes for my kids or practical things like a toaster. Buying things for other people makes me happy, but buying - or even receiving - things for myself just seems to bring me pain....more

I love the cute bow necklace.  So simple--perfect for the holidays.

Five DIY Holiday Beauty Gifts

My mom has recently gotten really into DIY beauty products. She's raiding the kitchen for everything from bananas, avocados and honey for hair conditioner to my grandmother's organic rose bush for homemade rose water. And her hair and skin actually look really, really good lately. But most people have trouble wrapping their heads around putting, well, food on the top of their head. But there are a lot of great homemade beauty products that can be prettily packaged and make wonderful gifts. Much better than, say, half an avocado, a couple of egg yolks and a plastic shower cap....more

Moisturizing for Eczema and Dry Skin Defense

Eczema is not pretty. It's painful and itchy and looks it. It's often described as a bad case of dry skin, but it's not quite that simple. Eczema is basically a reccuring rash, often afflicting the same areas of the body again and again - the neck, the inside and/or outside of the elbows and knees, the backs of legs and buttocks, etc. etc. When my son had his first eczema flare-up, I had no idea what I was dealing with, and I scurried around trying to relieve what I thought was a diaper rash gone mad....more
