Pumpkin Nanaimo Bars

It's been a while since we've baked together. The last thing that we made together was this risotto...more

Plum Torte

I came across this recipe for the "Originial Plum Torte" on the New York Times website, and it included a brief anecdote. It was published annually in the Times for several years in the 80s, but the editors eventually decided to do away with it. The last year it was published, “the recipe was printed in larger type than usual with a broken-line border around it to encourage clipping," according to the the creator, Marian Burros....more

Chocolate Chip Cookie in a Cup

Really, I don't know if I can ever get used to the hectics of moving in back to campus every year for the start of the fall quarter. Still, it's good to be back in Evanston and reuniting with familiar faces without the pressure of classes, at least for yesterday and today. And then school starts, and that's a whole different story ....more

Chocolate Peanut Butter Mousse Cups

Peach Cream Bars

Is it kind of crazy to have a summery peachy recipe in September? Maybe. But as long as the temperature is in the 80s and 90s -- which it has been consistently for every single day of the past 2 or 3 weeks -- you can't seriously convince me that it's autumn ....more

Grape Pizza

I've complained talked about the dining halls at Harvard a couple times on this blog. I admit that HUDS (Harvard University Dining Services) does spoil us more than a lot of schools: we have endless buffet meals three times a day, the food is fairly healthy, and they try to keep it local (i.e. alllllllll the squash.) But HUDS does like to get...experimental. I've been eating real world food all summer so some concoctions escape me, but one of the more memorable dishes is grape pizza ....more

How to Fill a Cupcake

The best cupcakes, I think, are the ones with something extra on the inside. As I've mentioned before, I don't like biting into a cupcake and getting a mouthful of overly sweet buttercream. But taking a bite and discovering a dot of tart lemon curd or sticky caramel in the center is entirely different ....more

Fresh Peach Ice Cream

I brainstormed a lot of ways to dress up this ice cream. Perhaps by adding some fresh ginger, or cookie crumbs to make it peach cobbler ice cream, I could make my ice cream more interesting and to keep it from being buried by the hundreds of thousands of hits that come up when you Google "peach ice cream." But in the end, I decided to keep it simple, and just let the very basic ingredients of this ice cream to shine through. So here it is, fresh peach ice cream without any of the bells and whistles I usually add ....more
