It’s Okay to Say No {Finding Balance}

I recently had the opportunity to participate on a relay team for a triathlon here in Las Vegas with some really great athletes.  I initially was totally up for it, but once I got into looking at my calendar, I realized that it conflicted with something else my husband and I had going on (aka beer and wine festival the previous night).  Yeah, drinking beer and wine the night before running a half marathon just doesn’t really sound appealing.  I thought about my options.  I could still go to the festival, but not drink.  I could skip the festival all together.  ...more

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things {about early morning running}

This morning my alarm went off way too early.  It’s Monday morning, back to work, back to a week full of responsibilities, commitments, and obligations.  The only thing I wanted to do was shut of my alarm and go back to sleep.  It also didn’t help that my 2 year old had been awake since 4:30am.  But, without thinking too much about it, I got up, got dressed, laced up my sneakers and poured myself a large cup of motivation…er, I mean coffee.  After downing my coffee and heading out the door, I started my run.  Almost instantly I was reminded of why I do this.&nb...more

A Little Running Education: Cadence

The last couple of weeks, Jeremy, one of the founders of my run club, Las Vegas Runners, has been working with us on some drills to help us improve our running. Today he taught us a little about cadence. With respect to running, cadence is how many times your feet touch the ground in a specific period of time (usually measured in one minute increments)....more

Fueling With Real Foods, Part 4: Pocket Fuel Naturals {and a giveaway!}

I’ve written before in this series about how convenient gels are for fueling on the go, but unfortunately they just don’t agree with me.  While whole foods are a great alternative, they’re not always practical.  In my search to find foods to fuel with that are effective, yet convenient enough to take with you on your workout, a friend of mine recommended I check out Pocket Fuel Naturals....more

Fueling With Real Food Series, Part 1: Dates

In my relatively short running experience, one thing that I’ve learned is that as much as I like to fuel long runs with gels and sports drinks, they don’t always like me. They give me horrible stomach pains and as convenient as they are,  the hippie in me would rather fuel with foods that are natural and have ingredients that I can pronounce rather than something created in a lab....more

This Post is Dedicated to my Husband

This morning, I had planned on getting up at 5am to hit up a 6am Body Pump class at my gym.  Our daughters were sleeping next to me in bed, so when my alarm went off, not only did it wake me up, but it also woke up our two year old.  I laid with her for a bit to try to get her to go back to sleep, but eventually I had to get up to make it to my class on time, and she only wanted Mommy next to her.  So, my awesome husband got up with her and read her books at 5:30am this morning.  When I got home, he had the kids up, fed and breakfast made for me as well.  And this i...more

Hi. I’m Julia and I’m addicted to food…

Well, only 3 foods actually.  Hummus, grapes, and smoothies.  I guess it could be worse, right?  I don’t know what it is about these three foods, but I could eat a very large portion of them every single day (and often I do).  I love snacking on hummus and carrot chips between breakfast and lunch, and grapes are my go to dessert when I’m craving something sweet after dinner, but smoothies are my absolute favorite post workout recovery food....more
