Nail polish trends for Spring, 2010

Even in Chicago, the weather is finally warm enough to have me thinking seriously about my spring wardrobe. And yet, here in Chicago, there is always a possibility that another snowstorm will hit. So savvy fashionistas think about ways to freshen up their winter clothes, because around here at least, we're going to be wearing them for the next month. The simplest, cheapest, and fastest update? A new bottle of nail polish.

Chanel's Particuliere nail polishLet's face it: some nail colors have started to look a little tired. The French manicure became popular because it was ladylike, flattering, and safe. But it's been around forever. At least 10 years. Can we finally say goodbye? Please? After all, if the argument started raging on beauty blogs in 2006, at this point, I'd say it's moot.

Another trend I'm willing to put on mothballs until next fall is very dark shades of polish. I love shades like OPI's Lincoln Park After Dark, but it's more of a Fall/Winter color.

The hottest polish color at the moment is Chanel's Particuliere, which has been blowing out of stores since January. It's a taupe color that is surprisingly flattering and chic.

Of course, it's also $22 a bottle. OPI's You Don't Know Jacques is a perfectly good substitute. For a lot less money.

But the absolute latest look for Spring, 2010 is shades of pale gray and lilac, like Essie Looking for Love nail polishEssie's Looking for Love.

The best thing about experimenting with nail polish colors is that they're so easy to change. It's just nail polish, after all. It's not hair dye. And with Sally Hansen and Wet 'n' Wild making excellent quality polishes at drug store prices, they're no need to spend a lot of money.

Think of it: for $5.00 your hands can shout "Spring 2010" even if your jeans are whispering "Fall 2009." (Or, in my case, "Fall 2008.")

For more on the subject of nail polish, see my post about nail polish for aging hands. You can also explore the wonderful world of nail polish blogs, which i find as addictive (and colorful) as Jelly Bellies. All Lacquered Up is a great place to start. Scrangie shows off every crazy color out there. And Dr. Frankenpolish showcases her home-made colors.

Poppy practices what she preaches and is currently wearing Sally Hansen's HD polish in Hi-Def--a holographic green--for St. Patrick's Day. Poppy hands out unsolicited beauty and style advice at The Beauty Boomer when she isn't making fun of celebrities on Mamarazzi.

Hi Laura,

I found a great non-toxic nail polish for my girls. Keeki Pure and Simple is the name.

I had my chemist friend check it out. She said it was a very nice product with nothing harmful in it.

I order it on-line from www.keeki.net ( http://www.keeki.net ). They also have a super yummy lip balm made with food grade ingredients. My kids and I always fight over it. My suggestion-order more than one!

I was so happy to find a safe product for my little ones after reading how toxic regular nail polish is. My girls and I LOVE this product. Give them a try, I know you will love it too!

I LOVE nail polish on my toes. I have so many colors, like emerald, a couple shades of blue, hot pink, orange, goth black, and several types of glitter. Now, I guess I'll have to get gray. I'm just wondering how well it looks against certain skin tones.

I never realized there were trends in nail polish! I usually go with pink... guess it's time to mix it up a little.

Bad news...Deborah Burnes in Look Great Live Green indicates that nearly 70% of nail polishes tested contained a dangerous chemical called DBP. I have read that nail polish makers supposedly started taking it out of nail polishes, but Burnes seems to indicate otherwise...DBP is illegal in Europe, and is a suspected teratogen and endocrine disruptor.

If you know of any nail polishes that for sure do not contain dangerous chemicals, let me know!

OK, I admit it. I am a bit of a nail polish freak. I have lots and lots of nail polish. I was just thinking yesterday that I need to get over to the beauty store and see what is new for spring. Because nail polish is like shoes: you can never have too many.

I haven't tried Chanel Particuliere but it is on my list for polishes I want right now.

I got a bottle of Chanel Particuliere as soon as it came out. I can't believe the amounts of compliments I  have gotten. I didn't think so many people would notice a freaking nail polish color but they do.
