National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Today December 6th, 2012 is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, in Canada.

It's 2012 and we're still talking about violence against women. Violence against women all over the world. How is it going to stop? In my humble opinion it's what we teach our children. It's what they see. The examples that are shown to them. If women allow themselves to be disrespected and mistreated, there is no way that the children watching them will know any different. At least until they experience the outside world and see what is going on in other households. If we teach our boys that women are 2nd & 3rd class citizens, of course that is the way that they're going to see women in the world.

Men, dad's, uncles, brother's need to lead by example. Boys look up to the men in their lives. Good or bad. If you smack your wife around, there's a pretty good chance that your son will smack his wife/girlfriend/significant other around. There's also a very good chance that your daughter will accept being mistreated by her husband/boyfriend/significant other. That's just how it goes.

My point? Lead my example and plenty of discussion. Tell them and show them what is acceptable and what is not acceptable. Worldwide women still do the majority of work when raising children. Therefore we are children's first teachers. Let's use that to our advantage.

Just my 2 cents.
