Delurking Day 2011I'm sure you've read a blog and not left a comment. Maybe you even really loved what was written, but you still didn't say anything. In fact, you might frequent various blogs, read them regularly and still not leave any comments. I do it; we all do. But today is the day to stop doing it. It's Delurking Day!

The origins are sketchy (but may belong to this guy) and the time of year is debated, but looking around the blogosphere today, there are many posts from bloggers requesting that their silent readers leave a comment. It's not a big contest to see who can get the most comments. Instead, it's a way for bloggers to get to know who is actually reading and what they might like (or dislike) about the blog. It's fun and a learning experiment rolled into a blog post.

I participated in Delurking Day festivities back when I was newer at the public blogging process. I could see these hits on my stat plugin, but I couldn't figure out who was reading. When I asked people to delurk and share a bit about themselves, a shocking thing happened: They did! I had such a lovely day responding to comments and interacting with readers.

If you have a blog, I encourage you to toss up a quick post today about Delurking Day. Ask your readers to tell a bit about themselves; where they're from, what they like and how on Earth they found your little niche in the web. And then be a responsible blog owner and reply to each person who took the time to delurk. Maybe you'll create a long-lasting friendship!

Of course, there's lots of talk about the process of delurking today. Here's how a few in our BlogHer Network are throwing down the topic in their own spaces.

Loralee at Loralee's Looney Tunes asked her readers to share something -- anything -- to get the conversation going.

You can say anything!

Talk about anything!

Like what you’ve done this week that you’ve loved! Link to a great post you’ve read or a video you’ve seen on youtube! Or if you’ve read an interesting book! Or tell us what your favorite word is! Or talk about horrible that movie “Dear John” was! Or your favorite guilty pleasure! Or THANK GOODNESS it’s Girl Scout Cookie season! Or BOO! on the new Zodiac signs (WTF is an “Ophiuchus” ANYWAY?). Or how much you like pie!

Colleen at A Madison Mom lets people know that she does care about their comments.

If you read and comment regularly... I love you! Comment again!!!

If you read and think... eh... she doesn't really care if I comment. What do I have to say? Comment now!!!! I do care! I love comments.

Carmen at Mom to the Screaming Masses also has a list of amusing things you can comment on if you can't think of anything off the top of your head.

Tell me the worst item of clothing you ever bought (hmm, probably multi colored lounge pants), your hair catastrophe (the words mullet and also home perm come to mind), your secret -- or not so secret -- blog crush, your favorite exercise at the gym,(pad rounds, for sure) or who you'd punch in the junk if you could. (No comment on two of those!)

Heather at No Pasa Nada wrote a post about her guilty pleasures and then, for delurking day festivities, asked her readers to share theirs too!

So while we’re here, did you know that today is DeLurking Day 2011? And do you know what that means? It means come on out. Tell me your guilty pleasures and that you, too, feel invested in Sammi and Ronnie’s relationship and think that the Situation might have a douchebag problem. What are your guilty pleasures? Lay ‘em out, my friends.

And BlogHer Contributing Editor Karen Walrond of Chookooloonks is giving away a copy of her new book, The Beauty of Different as an added bonus for delurking. Woo!

These are just a few of the hundreds of blogs participating today. Are you?

If you're participating in National Delurking Day, leave your blog post URL in a comment here. And then hop around to the other links to leave some comment love on others' blogs. And hey! If you've never commented on a BlogHer post, why not today? Here or another post; give it a whirl! Happy

That myth is more potent than history.
I believe that dreams are more powerful than facts -
That hope always triumphs over experience -
That laughter is the only cure for grief.

I am so guilty of hit and run reading! I need to comment more. It really is true that comments are like currency to bloggers.

Here's my delurking day post, although I'm scared to post it and have no comments!

For all of those days that I read something and never leave a comment ... I vow to make up for it. I think part of the problem is wondering what to write other than "love the post" ... It try to think of something original or insightful to add to the conversation. But when writers block rears its ugly head I just keep clicking and never leave a note. Shame on me!

I've posted and cross-linked! Thanks for the reminder -- since the icon seems to be everywhere I am presuming it was okay to use but I wasn't sure whom to credit for it?
