National Gourmet Coffee Day is Tomorrow

To kick off National Gourmet Coffee Day tomorrow (January 18), I thought I would share two of my favorite coffeehouse-inspired recipes and introduce you to my all-time favorite espresso machine (from the Nestle Kitchens blog).

The Café Latte

This is the drink that Seattle made famous. It’s similar to the cappuccino with less foam and more steamed milk. Think one-third espresso, one-third steamed milk and one-third foam. I like mine with a touch of ground cinnamon!

The Cappuccino

This drink is basically equal parts espresso and steamed frothy milk. It’s typically topped with a dusting of cinnamon or cocoa.

The Espresso Machine

Nespresso is my favorite espresso machine, hands down! I have tried many.

Nespresso Citiz Machine

I own the CitiZ Nespresso machine and our Nestle Kitchens has the CitiZ machine with Aeroccino Frother pictured above (if you haven’t checked out this frother, put this on your list!). I ended up purchasing it separately since I loved it so much.

All of the Nespresso machines make a mean latte and cappuccino. Seriously! I use the Ristretto capsules since these are the strongest. The best espresso has strong caramel-colored foam on top, which is the crema. And that is exactly what you get with Ristretto.

I recently did some experimenting with Coffee-mate’s new Café Collections line. Flavors include White Chocolate Caramel Latte, Caramel Macchiato and Café Latte. I started by adding them to my morning latte. So tasty! I usually don’t add sweeteners or syrups to my lattes, so this was a big step. A step in the right direction. A little goes a long way.  Start with 1 tablespoon Coffee-mate creamer and add more to your liking.

In these recipes, I paired The Café Latte with White Chocolate Caramel and The Cappuccino with Caramel Macchiato. Below is The Café Latte, pictured at the top of this post. Check out that foam! It’s why I love the Nespresso Aeroccino Frother (and Blogger friends, this works really well for food styling).

Tall White Chocolate Caramel Café Latte

Ingredients for 1 serving:

Directions:

Steam milk and Coffee-mate until 150° to 160° F. Brew espresso into tall coffee mug; pour in milk mixture, holding back foam. Spoon foam over the top.

If you don’t have a milk steamer/frother, you can simply heat the milk and Coffee-mate on the stove or in a microwave until it just barely reaches a boil. Whisk briskly with a wire whisk to create foam.

Caramel Macchiato Cappuccino Recipe

Caramel Macchiato Cappuccino (pictured above)

Ingredients for 1 serving:

Directions:

Brew a single shot of espresso into cappuccino cup. Steam milk and Coffee-mate together until 150° to 160° F. Pour over espresso, holding back foam with spoon. Spoon foam over the top. Dust with cinnamon.

Again, if you don’t have a milk steamer/frother, you can simply heat the milk and Coffee-mate on the stove or in a microwave until it just barely reaches a boil. Whisk briskly with a wire whisk to create foam.

For both café latte and cappuccino recipes, if you don’t have an espresso machine, use a dark roast espresso coffee. If your beans are pre-ground, grind them again before you brew. This will release oils and flavor, making it stronger and taste fresher.
