This was a big week in mascara at BeautyHacks, which makes me so happy; I love all these mascara posts, because as you know, I am obsessed with mascara, particularly with finding The Perfect mascara. I'm still searching, but what I have found is the perfect mascara remover. Because Makeup Rule #1 is ALWAYS TAKE IT OFF AT THE END OF THE DAY.
I am entirely serious.
Sleeping in your mascara is terrible for your lashes; mascara -- particularly waterproof formulas, which I am partial to -- can dry your lashes out. Leaving your mascara on while you sleep is not only bad for your lashes but bad for your eyes -- think about the gunk you wake up with when you sleep in your makeup. NOT GOOD. Take five minutes and take it all off before you crash. Your lashes will thank you.
For easy removal of even the most waterproof, long-lasting eye makeup, I really love Neutrogena Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover. Let's back up a little: my goal for great mascara is that it stay put all day, despite the fact that my day often begins at 5:00 am and ends well after 11:00 pm. in addition, I wear contacts, and have allergies and oily skin. The combination of long days, irritated eyes, and skin that could solve the current fuel crisis really push my mascara to the limits.
So when I coat my lashes, it had better be with a mascara that will outlast it all and not leave me with raccoon eyes, and when I take it off, the remover best not leave me with greasy skin.
At the end of the day, I want to remove that durable mascara with something gentle, something that will leave my lashes feeling conditioned and clean. I've tried a lot of removers, and tops in my book is Neutrogena's basic oil-free formula. This stuff strips even the most waterproof mascaras without any muscle at all, leaving lashes and lids feeling clean and moisturized. Like all Neutrogena products for eyes, it is gentle and safe for contact wearers, and it has no fragrance or residue.
Neutrogena Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover is available in drugstores for about $8.00.
Now that you know what the perfect makeup remover is, what's the Perfect Mascara? Ask the BlogHer BeautyHackers!
Contributing Editor Jenifer Scharpen dished about Kiss Me mascara ("it holds up to a good long cry, any amount of eye rubbing, and even yoga class in a 105 degree room with major humidity"), Bri Daisy tested L'Oreal's Bare Naturale Mascara
("I was sure I would be wearing it on my cheekbones by the end of the day,if it didn't rub off altogether. I was wrong"), and Mode Monitor wondered about Guyliner ("I’m OK with men using moisturizer and masks and scrubs and such, but make up? I don’t think so").
