I've been looking forward to this moment for a long time! The new BlogHer Custom Profiles allow you to add just the content you want people to see when they view your profiles, in the order that you want people to see it. Even better, you can decide which information to share with everyone, with just your friends or to keep completely private.

Log into BlogHer.com (or if you're already logged in) click Account Settings (or settings) from the My BlogHer menu. Click Public Profile.

The first thing you'll see is the personal data block, fill in those blocks (and remember, you'll be able to mark pieces of that area private in just a second.)

Next, enter a brief bio that tells folks more about you.

After that, there are several module types listed. When you click a module type, a menu expands.

click My BlogHer Conferences to view the menu that allows you to tell people which conferences you have attended (or will be attending if you're going to an 09 conference.)

Click Tags to enter tags that further describe you, your blog, your work, or your life (these will come more important in the weeks ahead, when a new member database search is launched!)

Click Sites to enter the name, url, RSS feed url and description of up to 10 of your online presences (your personal blog, your work blog, your Twitter feed, Facebook, youtube, Flickr etc...)

Now click My BlogHer Settings. This is where you will decide which pieces of profile content will be visible only to you, only to your friends or only to the public.

Next click Friends to indicate which order your friends should be displayed on your profile - alphabetically, those you've recently added, those you've been friends with the longest or choose your "Top 6" friends.

Click Themes to choose from four different color themes for your profile.

Click Submit and you'll be taken to your profile. Use the drop down menu at the top of the page to see how your friends will see your profile and how the public will see your profile. (If something isn't quite right, go back to the Public Profile admin page and make changes! Maintain your privacy, please!)

You can now drag modules up and down using the small arrows next to each profile content module. Just put your mouse over the four way directional arrow, click and hold the mouse key down and drag the piece up or down. The location of the module will automatically save, no need to click submit.

Go play with your new profile, surf around and leave comments on profiles, get to know members of the community. And of course, post your questions and feedback right here in the comments - or stop by Chatter and talk to us there. I'm also always available by email: denise@blogher.com

Many thanks for the step-by-step setting up a profile. My details were all over the place before (much like my mind!).

I'm looking forward to getting involved here on the site.

Thanks again.

In the top right corner of the page, click Using This Site. Each tool is listed and there are links to detailed explanations with screenshots for several tools.

If you aren't sure how to do something, where to find something, or what one of the steps means - just ask. Leave a comment on the page you're reading. Leave a Chatter comment. Join the BlogHer Beginners Group and ask your question by creating a new forum post.

Lots of help is available - just ask.

(To favorite a post, click the star that appears either next to the title or in the footer of the content.)

I'm not sure what you're asking about Books. We do offer a list a book feature for published authors.

21st Century Grandparent 5 pts

I'm new too, and I still can't figure out so much of this site.  Is there a tutorial anywhere that walks you through?  I'm not even clear what "tags" are, and I haven't been able to figure out how to make a blog one of my "favorites".  I know I saw some drop down box showing something about books too.  I have no clue what that's all about.  How about some type of Glossary?  Remember those of us over the age of 45 might not be current on the "lingo" that is used in the blogging world.  It's hard to learn if you don't know what the terms used mean.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Embracing and sharing the joys and challenges of grandparenting in the 21st century!

Still working my way around here, and I do find these things to be very helpful.....

This is weird, I was just thinking about you this morning... well thinking about a blog post I'd like to write and including you in the post was something I was thinking about.

If the stress doesn't get me this weekend, I'm hoping to blog it on Sunday. :-)

I updated my profile two days ago and thought, "Wow, they've done a lot since I was here last."  It was totally easy and fun to update.  Thanks for the new features!

Idea: just get in touch w/ Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Myspace, LinkedIn....Let 'em all know how it's done. And invite them all to sync......

Wahoo to all of the above. Seriously need to revamp....I have so many different profiles out there b/c 6 mos ago i was tiptoeing into the web.

Now I'm frustrated that I'm one persona in one place, another in another place...was just sitting down to draft the full monty :) of me :) and now can pour forth on my BlogHer profile and rev up all my others too....(ah, for the day to just have one profile...something that Charlene Li talked a lot about at SXSW..tho I admit I only followed through tweets).

THANK you for this post. YOU are a marvey mentor!!

Your tone speaks to all learning styles, your visuals helps this visual kid learn bettah! and your approachable "I'm here to help" makes even the bravest of us feel SUPPORTED!!!

Yes, it's still like pioneering a new turf. You'd think after 3 roadies across country going to destinations where I had zero job, plan, apartment, etc...felt the pull...you'd think moving forward on the web would be seemless and simple.

I still have to hug myself for even trying....daily. and getting better at it. So baby steps and tutorials that nurture, mother AND NUDGE are really helpful.

Thanks so much lady.

Um. No. Haven't updated yet. Will and will return here to let you know when I do.

And I am ashamed to admit I never noticed the whole "friends" and "following" thing.  Going to start now! :)

Leave a comment here or in Chatter. I keep clicking into profiles to leave comments and see the updates and would love to visit the ones that have been updated FIRST.

Because, as Karen said... it's fun to surf them!

Thanks for the encouraging advice. I was beginning to wonder whether this site was going to be as fun and interactive as facebook, where you can always see people communicating and responding to each other's photo albums or walls or whatever, but you have inspired me to stick it out for a little bit longer :-)
