New evidence about brain function and what (and when) you eat

On October 17 research from new studies was shared at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience. Using imaging technology, researchers have been able to link diet with how and what people think. Here are some highlights of the research:

1. Obesity causes people to take more effort to complete complex decision-making tasks.

2. Skipping breakfast triggers the pleasure-seeking part of the brain when looking at high-calorie foods (even pictures of these foods).

3. We need to rethink the idea of fasting to lose weight. Skipping breakfast generally makes us eat more food at lunch.

4. Drugs that help keep substance abusers clean might also work on binge eaters.

5. Although diet-related metabolic disorders like diabetes do harm the brain, including effects on memory and spatial learning, taking omega-3 supplements can help.

6. A compound that is still in development may help keep the brain from initiating food cravings when looking at pictures of food.
