Ground Zero Workers Reach $657.5M Deal in Health Lawsuits

The New York Times reports that the city of New York has reached a settlement of up to $657.5 million in the cases of some 10,000 people who worked rescue and cleanup at the World Trade Center site after the attacks of September 11, 2001.

Asthma and other breathing problems were the most common illnesses cited by plaintiffs, but some of the cases addressed by the settlement were put forth by workers who aren't sick now but fear they will become so later. The plaintiffs claimed the city of New York did not provide adequate safety equipment, such as respirators.

According to the Times,

Payouts to the plaintiffs would come out of a federally financed insurance fund of about $1.1 billion that is controlled by the city. At least 95 percent of the plaintiffs must accept its terms for it take effect. If 100 percent of the plaintiffs agree to the terms, the total settlement would be $657.5 million. But if only the required 95 percent agreed, the total would be reduced to $575 million.
