What does “character” mean anyway? Amy Bloom has some thoughts.

Too many public apologies lately. Too many explanations and excuses, and many of them include some variation on this theme: “I wasn’t acting like myself. That was out of character for me....more

Message to Harry Reid: Dude, "Negro" is So 1960s

By now, everyone has probably heard of the Harry Reid and Rod Blagojevich outbursts about society's punching bag ... black folks. In case you haven't been paying attention (which in some ways, is quite sad): In a new book, Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, McCain and Palin, and the Race of a Lifetime, Reid is quoted as saying that the  believed Obama could become the country's first black president because he was "light-skinned" and had "no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one." ...more

Another good reason to keep newspapers alive - for the sales circulars

I spend hours online but I’m still a newspaper junkie.  Online shopping lets me research anything I’m thinking about buying.  And then there are all the juicy comments which are often called "reviews."  Ha!   I start off examining customers’ comments and then I stop at a review where someone is telling a harrowing story about exactly what happened the night they brought their new mattress home. Sagging!  Sides collapsing!  Back pain! Co-sleepers sniping at each other in the morning! ...more

I hate shopping. I'm thrifty and don't really want to buy anything - ever. But I do like sale ...more

Sarah Palin Takes On Fox

Sometimes NOT winning an election is the real path to victory. Al Gore, for example, translated his narrow, court-ordered loss to George W. Bush into a successful career as Captain Planet's alter ego. Sarah Palin, Vice Presidential nominee on the failed McCain presidential bid, is trading policy debates for speaking engagements and a brand spanking new career as a television pundit. ...more

I'm back

I wear a lot of hats like most of the women I know. But when my son was born last year my first time mom hat took over and blogging took a back seat. I feared spending too much time online because of the possibility of missing those beautiful moments off.  But after some time, I began to miss it.  I missed weighing in on the issues that are important to me and those that are simply matters of frivolity. And really, I came to see being a mom as manageable and not the  big scary world everyone had been warning me it was....more
