Canadian National Exhibition

The Canadian National Exhibition, or the Ex, is celebrating 175 years of operation this summer. As someone who grew up far away from where it is held the Ex has always held a certain mystique for me. It was mentioned in books and stories and on the news. My home province has its own version, as do many others, and I loved it. It was a defining part of summer. I've always longed to go to the national version. ...more

My head and kidneys hurt, but I've made it six hours. Every Baptist bone in my body is revolting right now. Why are you fasting in August, they're asking? We want pancakes and coffee. Welcome to my American Ramadan: 29 days of fasting, Jesus and New Year. ...more

Tornadoes Near Toronto, State of Emergency in Vaughan

This is the thing, in Canada we are used to pretty wacky weather. It does, however, tend to be of the winter sort with of blizzards and ice storms. Sometimes there are forest fires or the tail end of a hurricane. These are things that we are more or less used to. Tornadoes on the other hand, well that's something completely different. Tornado warnings aren't totally uncommon in parts of Canada (and they are probably less uncommon than I want to believe). But to have a tornado warning for the city of Toronto and to have multiple tornadoes touch down in Southern Ontario in one evening? Well, that's just plain scary. ...more

Pick up the Sunday NYT Magazine: It's All About Empowering, Funding & Educating Women

Even though I've had to cut back on a lot of my donations this year, I've continued to sponsor a woman survivor of war each month through Women for Women International. I also celebrated my 40th birthday by setting up a Birthday Wish using the Causes application on Facebook, and raised $580 for Women for Women International with my Facebook pals. Why am I so focused on this organization? Because in my heart of hearts I know that empowering and educating all women and girls is one of the most important things we can do to make the world a better place. Watch The Girl Effect video to see why (it's only 2 minutes 23 seconds long). ...more
