No thanks, I'd rather be pregnant?!

I had the Mirena IUD put in about 10 days ago. Three days later I was begging my doctor to take it out. I was having a host of side-effects, the most disconcerting was difficulty breathing, on top of headache, super fatigue (like early pregnancy), total brain fog (would read things over and over again and not comprehend), and overall, general bitchiness, if you can consider that a side effect. Simultaneously, I started to develop a weird rash on my legs, which I didn't connect with the IUD until I saw my internist who said it looked systemic, like an allergy. Ding ding. The rash started the day after I had the IUD put in.

When I called the nurse to get into my OBGYN, she says, “Oh the Mirena wouldn’t cause those symptoms.” And, when I saw my OBGYN she said, “We’ll I haven’t heard of this before, but you’re a down to earth enough person, that I believe you, so let’s take it out.” I’m thinking, you’re darn straight you’ll take it out! For a bit of background… being sensitive to hormonal birth control, I decided on the Mirena because my doctor said that the hormonal effect is minimal compared to the pill, or Depo-Provera. Well that couldn’t have been more wrong. Who knows if it was the hormone or some chemical in the Mirena that I was allergic to, but I felt better 24 hours after she took it out (like I could breathe again), although, I’m still have some lingering side effects, like this nasty rash, jump starting my period, and moodiness. Most of all, I’m pretty pissed off, that this thing is being marketed so heavily without enough education on possible side effects or complications. In fact if you ask the medical community how it works, they often respond, “we don’t really know.” SCARY.

So back to someother method I guess. Or the “snip, snip” for the hubby. I’m just not sure if we’re ready to make that decision yet (we have two boys). Anyone else experience side effects from the Mirena? Have a favorite non-hormonal birth control? Thanks for your help!

I didn't have a huge amount of luck with a non-hormonal (copper) IUD, but since it's hormone free, you might be willing to try that, once you've recovered from this venture.

As I have a very dippy uterus (posterior, I believe they call it), the damned thing never really stayed in the right spot. That caused me some unpleasant problems.

That's crazy. I've never heard of side effects like that. I've been lucky to not have a single one from my Mirena, other than the fewer periods of course -- and I'm not complaining about that one.
